Numbers: from one to one crore

Explanation

Numbers are everywhere: phone numbers, prices, ages and bus numbers. Learn 1 to 20 first, then the tens (30, 40, 50), then hundred, thousand and lakh. Say phone numbers one digit at a time.

Numbers 1 to 12 have their own names. From 13 to 19, most numbers end in "-teen" (thirteen, fourteen). The tens end in "-ty" (twenty, thirty). After that, you just join them: twenty-one, thirty-five, ninety-nine.

10ten100one hundred

thirteen, thirty

Say it: thur-TEEN, THUR-tee

Stress the END in "-teen" numbers and the START in "-ty" numbers. This stops mix-ups between 13 and 30.

fifteen, fifty

Say it: fif-TEEN, FIF-tee

two hundred and fifty

Say it: too HUN-dred and FIF-tee

In Indian and British English we say "and" after hundred. Americans often drop it: "two hundred fifty".

one thousand five hundred

Say it: wun THOW-zund fyv HUN-dred

Say "thousand", not "thousands", after a number: "five thousand rupees".

Big numbers: the Indian way and the international way

NumberIndian systemInternational system
1,00,000 (100,000)one lakhone hundred thousand
10,00,000 (1,000,000)ten lakhone million
1,00,00,000 (10,000,000)one croreten million
100,00,00,000 (1,000,000,000)one hundred croreone billion
Tip: Lakh and crore are perfect in India. With people from other countries, use thousand, million and billion. Example: "The flat costs eighty lakh, that is about eight million rupees."
Think of it like this: Think of the Indian and international systems like two different maps of the same city. The places (the amounts) are the same; only the names of the roads (the commas and words) change.

Phone numbers and digits

My number is nine eight seven, six five four, three two one zero.

Say it: my NUM-ber iz nyn ayt SEV-en...

Say phone numbers digit by digit, in small groups. Pause between groups.

double five

Say it: DUB-ul FYV

Two same digits together: "double five". Three: "triple seven". Zero can be "zero" or "oh".

Could you repeat the number, please?

Say it: kud yoo ri-PEET the NUM-ber, pleez?

Careful: Common mistakes: "fourty" (correct: forty), "two hundreds" (correct: two hundred), and mixing up 13 and 30 because of weak stress.
Tip: Practise every day: read aloud the numbers you see, such as bus numbers, prices and car number plates.
