Please, thank you, sorry and excuse me

Explanation

Four small words make your English polite: please, thank you, sorry and excuse me. Use "please" when you ask, "thank you" when you get, "sorry" when you make a mistake, and "excuse me" to get attention.

In English, politeness (शिष्टाचार) is often shown with small words, not with a special form of "you" like "aap". So "please" and "thank you" matter a lot. Without them, a request can sound rude, even when you do not mean it.

Think of it like this: These words are like oil in a machine. The machine (the conversation) still works without oil, but it is noisy and rough. A little "please" and "thank you" makes everything run smoothly.
WordWhen to use itExample
PleaseWhen you ask for somethingTwo cups of tea, please.
Thank you / ThanksWhen someone helps or givesThank you for your help.
SorryWhen you make a mistake or did not hearSorry, I'm late.
Excuse meTo get attention or pass someoneExcuse me, where is the bus stop?

Please sit down.

Say it: PLEEZ sit DOWN

A glass of water, please.

Say it: a GLAAS of WAW-ter, PLEEZ

"Please" can go at the start or the end of a request.

Thank you so much.

Say it: THANK yoo so MUCH

For "th", put your tongue lightly between your teeth.

You're welcome.

Say it: yor WEL-kum

The usual reply to "thank you". You can also say "No problem" or "My pleasure".

Sorry, I didn't hear you.

Say it: SOR-ee, ai DID-unt HEER yoo

Sorry, could you say that again?

Say it: SOR-ee, kud yoo SAY that a-GEN?

Much better than "What?" which can sound rude.

That's okay. / No problem.

Say it: thats oh-KAY / no PROB-lem

Reply when someone says sorry to you.

Excuse me, is this seat free?

Say it: ek-SKYOOZ mee, iz this SEET free?

Excuse me, may I come in?

Say it: ek-SKYOOZ mee, may ai kum IN?

Careful: Saying "Thank you" to family or close friends is not cold in English. It is normal and kind. Many Indian learners skip it; try to use it more.
Careful: Do not say "Sorry" when you mean "Excuse me" to pass someone. Say "Excuse me" first. Say "Sorry" if you bump into them.
Tip: Rule of three: every request gets "please", every help gets "thank you", every small mistake gets "sorry". Practise this for one week.
