Quick answer

A bigha has no single size: it is 14,400 sq ft in West Bengal and Assam, 9,075 sq ft in Haryana’s old records and 27,225 sq ft as UP’s or Rajasthan’s pucca bigha. Standard units are fixed: 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 40 guntha = 100 cents = 8 kanal, and 1 gaj = 9 sq ft.

Bigha, katha and biswa change size by state.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in a bigha?

It depends on the state, and often the district. Common figures: 14,400 sq ft in West Bengal and Assam; 27,225 sq ft for the pucca bigha of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan; 9,075 sq ft in Haryana’s older revenue records; 21,780 sq ft for Punjab’s 4-kanal bigha; about 8,712 sq ft in Himachal Pradesh. Pick your state above, or enter your local bigha with the custom option.

How many bigha make an acre?

About 3 in West Bengal and Assam (43,560 ÷ 14,400 = 3.03), 1.6 for a 27,225 sq ft pucca bigha, 4.8 in Haryana’s old records (officially "4 bigha 16 biswa = 1 acre") and 2 for Punjab’s 4-kanal bigha.

What is a gaj?

A gaj is a square yard, 9 square feet or 0.836 square metres. Plot sizes in north India are usually quoted in gaj: a 100-gaj plot is 900 sq ft, a 200-gaj plot 1,800 sq ft.

What is the difference between a cent, a decimal and a guntha?

A cent and a decimal are the same unit, one hundredth of an acre (435.6 sq ft): “cent” in the south, “decimal” in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Bengal. A guntha (gunta) is one fortieth of an acre, 1,089 sq ft or 121 sq yd, used in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Which figure should I trust for a land deal?

The area in the official record (khatauni, jamabandi, 7/12, RTC, patta), which is almost always in hectares, acres or square metres. Use local units to understand it, but have the sale deed state the area in a standard unit so there is no argument about what a bigha meant.
