I am, you are, he is: the verb "be"

Explanation

The verb "be" has three forms in the present: am, is and are. Use "I am", "he/she/it is" and "you/we/they are". It is the most used verb in English. "है/हैं/हूँ" के लिए am, is, are का प्रयोग होता है।

In Hindi we say "मैं छात्र हूँ", "वह डॉक्टर है", "हम दोस्त हैं". In English, the words hoon, hai and hain become am, is and are. Which one you use depends on the pronoun (सर्वनाम), the small word that stands for a person or thing: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.

Questions: put the verb first

Are you ready? Yes, I am.

Say it: aar yoo RED-ee? YES, ai AM

क्या आप तैयार हैं? हाँ, मैं हूँ।

Short answers: "Yes, I am." / "No, I'm not." Do not say "Yes, I'm." at the end.

Is she a doctor? No, she isn't.

Say it: iz shee a DOK-ter? NO, shee IZ-unt

क्या वह डॉक्टर है? नहीं, वह नहीं है।

Think of it like this: Think of am, is and are as three different keys. "I" opens only with "am". "He, she, it" open with "is". "You, we, they" open with "are". Use the wrong key and the door (the sentence) does not open properly.
Careful: Common mistakes: "I is", "They is", "He are". Also, do not drop the verb: say "She is busy", not "She busy".
Careful: "You" always takes "are", even for one person: "You are my best friend." Never "you is".
Tip: Describe five people or things around you right now: "My mother is at home. The fan is on. We are happy."
