Joining early is the cheapest decision

For the same ₹5,000 pension, someone joining at 18 pays ₹210 × 12 × 42 = ₹1,05,840 in total, while someone joining at 40 pays ₹1,454 × 12 × 20 = ₹3,48,960. The pension is identical; the difference is 22 extra years of compounding on the early joiner's money.

APY or NPS?

APY suits workers outside the income-tax net who want a fixed, guaranteed pension. Anyone who pays tax, or wants a larger and market-linked retirement fund, should look at the NPS calculator; salaried employees also build a corpus through EPF, and anyone can add PPF.

Frequently asked questions

Who can join Atal Pension Yojana?

Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a savings account at a bank or post office. From 1 October 2022, anyone who is or has been an income-tax payer cannot join; an account opened by an income-tax payer after that date is closed and the contributions returned.

How much do I pay for a ₹5,000 pension?

It depends only on your age when you join: ₹210 a month at 18, ₹376 at 25, ₹577 at 30, ₹902 at 35 and ₹1,454 at 40, paid until you turn 60. The full chart is below.

What happens after the subscriber dies?

The spouse receives the same pension for life. After both have died, the nominee receives the corpus: ₹1.7 lakh for a ₹1,000 pension up to ₹8.5 lakh for ₹5,000. If the subscriber dies before 60, the spouse can continue contributing or exit with the accumulated amount.

Is the APY pension really guaranteed?

Yes. The government guarantees the minimum pension you chose; if the invested contributions earn less than needed, it makes up the shortfall, and if they earn more, the extra is passed on as a higher pension.

What if I miss a contribution?

A penalty of ₹1 a month for contributions up to ₹100, ₹2 for ₹101 to ₹500, ₹5 for ₹501 to ₹1,000 and ₹10 above ₹1,000. Persistent non-payment leads to the account being frozen and eventually closed.
