Text Compare: Find the Difference Between Two Texts

Compare two versions of a text or two PDFs word by word, line by line or letter by letter, side by side or inline, ignoring case or spacing if you like.

Private · on device. Runs in your browser: your file is not uploaded. No sign-up.

Original

Changed version

See exactly what changed

Paste the original on the left and the new version on the right. Removed text is struck through in red, added text is green, and the counts show how much changed. Side by side keeps both versions readable; inline shows the edits in one flowing text, like tracked changes.

Typical uses

  • Checking what the other side changed in a contract, agreement or rent deed before you sign.
  • Comparing two drafts of an application, essay or circular.
  • Finding the one digit that differs between two lists of account or roll numbers (compare by characters or lines).
  • Comparing the text of two PDFs, such as an old and a new version of a policy.

Comparing files

Load a PDF, Word document or .txt file into either side. The text is read in your browser; nothing is uploaded. To check that a file is byte-for-byte unchanged rather than comparing its words, use verify a document.

Frequently asked questions

Should I compare by words, lines or characters?

Words suit prose: contracts, letters, essays. Lines suit lists, code and data where each line is a record. Characters find the smallest changes, a digit in an account number or a single letter, and are best for short texts.

Can it compare two PDFs?

Yes, if they contain text. Load each PDF and its text is extracted in your browser and compared. A scanned PDF is a picture with no text, so run it through OCR first. Layout, fonts and images are not compared, only the words.

What does "Ignore extra spaces" do?

It treats runs of spaces and tabs as one space and ignores spaces at the ends of lines, so re-spaced text is not shown as changed. Turn it off to catch every spacing difference.

What does the "Same" percentage mean?

The share of the longer text, counted in the unit you chose, that is unchanged. Two versions with a few edited words in a long letter will be close to 100%.

Does it compare Hindi correctly?

Yes. Letters are compared as whole characters, so a changed vowel sign is shown with its consonant (कि against क) rather than as a stray mark, and words are split the way the Unicode standard says.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Both texts and any files stay in your browser. That is why it is safe for contracts and confidential drafts.
