Amount

Commas, ₹ or Rs. and a closing /- are fine. Paise or cents are rounded to two places.

In words

Rupees Twelve Crore Thirty Four Lakh Fifty Six Thousand Seven Hundred Eighty Nine and Fifty Paise Only

₹ 12,34,56,789.50

Lakh and crore, or million and billion. India groups digits as 12,34,56,789 (twelve crore thirty-four lakh…); most other countries write 123,456,789 (one hundred and twenty-three million…). The same number, read differently, so pick the style your cheque, invoice or form expects.

Cheque writing, done right

A cheque's amount in words is what the bank goes by if the words and the figures disagree, so it has to be exact. Write it in the Indian system, begin with "Rupees", end with "Only", and draw a line through any space left over. This tool gives you the words to copy; check them against the figure before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write ₹1,25,000 in words on a cheque?

"Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand Only". Start with "Rupees", write the amount in the Indian system (lakh and crore), and end with "Only" so nothing can be added after it. Write it close to the left edge without large gaps.

How are paise written?

After the rupees, with "and": ₹1,250.50 is "Rupees One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty and Fifty Paise Only". An amount under one rupee is just the paise, such as "Seventy Five Paise Only".

What is the difference between lakh/crore and million/billion?

They group the same digits differently. In India, after the first thousand, digits are grouped in twos: 1,00,000 is one lakh and 1,00,00,000 is one crore. Internationally they are grouped in threes: 100,000 is one hundred thousand and 10,000,000 is ten million. One crore equals ten million.

Can I get the amount in Hindi?

Yes. Choose हिंदी and the amount is written in Hindi words, for example ₹12,500 becomes "बारह हज़ार पाँच सौ रुपये मात्र". Every number from one to ninety-nine has its own word in Hindi, and all of them are included.

Should I write "and" before the last part?

Indian cheques usually leave it out ("One Hundred Five"), and this tool follows that. In British and international English it is usual to say "One Hundred and Five", which the international option does.

How large a number does it handle?

Up to 15 digits before the decimal point, which is 999 lakh crore in the Indian system or nearly a thousand trillion internationally. Amounts are handled exactly, digit by digit, so large values do not lose precision.
