Money and prices in rupees

Explanation

Ask "How much is this?" to know a price. Say prices like "two hundred rupees" or "ninety-nine rupees fifty paise". Learn words for paying: cash, UPI, card, change. पैसे और दाम की बात अंग्रेज़ी में आसान है।

India's money is the rupee (₹). One rupee has 100 paise. In English we write "Rs" or "₹" and say "rupees". Most daily prices are now in whole rupees.

How much is this?

Say it: how MUCH iz this?

यह कितने का है?

How much are these?

Say it: how MUCH aar THEEZ?

ये कितने के हैं?

Use "is this" for one thing, "are these" for many.

It's two hundred rupees.

Say it: its too HUN-dred roo-PEEZ

यह दो सौ रुपये का है।

It costs ninety-nine rupees.

Say it: it KOSTS NYN-tee NYN roo-PEEZ

इसकी क़ीमत निन्यानवे रुपये है।

Can I pay by UPI?

Say it: kan ai PAY by yoo-pee-AI?

क्या मैं UPI से पेमेंट कर सकता हूँ?

Also: "Can I pay by card?", "I will pay in cash."

Do you have change for five hundred?

Say it: doo yoo hav CHAYNJ for fyv HUN-dred?

क्या आपके पास पाँच सौ के छुट्टे हैं?

"Change" = छुट्टे पैसे, or the money you get back.

Here is your change.

Say it: heer iz yor CHAYNJ

ये रहे आपके बाक़ी पैसे।

Can I have the bill, please?

Say it: kan ai hav the BIL, pleez?

बिल दे दीजिए, प्लीज़।

In India and the UK: "bill". In the USA, at a restaurant: "check".

WordMeaning (Hindi)Example
priceदाम / क़ीमतThe price is high.
cost (verb)क़ीमत होनाIt costs fifty rupees.
cheapसस्ताThis shop is cheap.
expensiveमहँगाThat phone is expensive.
discountछूटIs there any discount?

receiptरसीदCan I have a receipt?
Think of it like this: Money talk is like a short cricket over: ask the price, hear the price, pay, get change. Six simple balls, and the over is done. Learn these few lines and you can shop anywhere.
Careful: Say "fifty rupees", not "fifty rupee" or "rupees fifty". The number comes first, and "rupees" is plural for more than one.
Careful: "Expensive" is the right word for "महँगा". Do not say "costly" too often; it is understood, but "expensive" is more common worldwide.
Tip: When you buy something this week, say the price to yourself in English before you pay.
