Days, months and dates

Explanation

There are seven days and twelve months. For dates we use special numbers: first, second, third, fourth. Say "on Monday", "in May" and "on the fifth of May". दिन, महीने और तारीख़ बोलना सीखें।

Days of the week

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Say it: MUN-day, TYOOZ-day, WENZ-day, THURZ-day, FRY-day, SAT-ur-day, SUN-day

सोमवार, मंगलवार, बुधवार, गुरुवार, शुक्रवार, शनिवार, रविवार

Wednesday sounds like "WENZ-day". The first "d" is silent.

Months of the year

January, February, March, April, May, June

Say it: JAN-yoo-ree, FEB-roo-ree, MAARCH, AY-pril, MAY, JOON

July, August, September, October, November, December

Say it: joo-LY, AW-gust, sep-TEM-ber, ok-TOH-ber, no-VEM-ber, di-SEM-ber

Ordinal numbers (for dates)

Ordinal numbers show order (क्रम): first, second, third. We use them for dates and floors: "the third floor", "the fifth of June".

Indian and British: "the fifth of May". American: "May fifth".

Years: 1998 = "nineteen ninety-eight"; 2005 = "two thousand and five"; 2026 = "twenty twenty-six".

Think of it like this: Think of "in, on, at" as boxes of different sizes. "In" is the big box (a month or year). "On" is a medium box (one day). "At" is the smallest box (an exact time).
Careful: Written dates can confuse. In India and the UK, 04/05 means 4 May. In the USA it means April 5. In emails to other countries, write the month as a word: "4 May 2026".
Tip: Every morning, say the day and date aloud: "Today is Tuesday, the fourteenth of October."
