Frequently asked questions
Which languages can it read?
More than 120. Every major Indian script is included: Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit (Devanagari), Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati, Punjabi (Gurmukhi), Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu and Sindhi, plus English, the European, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and South-East Asian languages, and several historic scripts.
Can it read two languages in one picture?
Yes. Pick both, for example Hindi and English. Each extra language makes reading a little slower, so choose only the ones in the picture.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The OCR engine and the language models are downloaded from this site the first time you use a language, then everything runs in your browser. Your pictures never leave the device.
How accurate is it?
On a clear screenshot or a flat, well-lit scan, very accurate. Words the engine is unsure of are outlined in amber so you can check them, and the text box is editable before you copy or download.
What is a searchable PDF?
A PDF that shows your picture exactly as it is, with the recognised words laid invisibly on top. You can search it, select and copy from it, and screen readers can read it aloud.
