How to use the spreadsheet

  1. Click a cell and type. Press Enter to go down, Tab to go right, or use the arrow keys.
  2. Start with = for a formula, such as =B2*C2 or =SUM(D2:D20). Σ adds up the numbers above the selected cell.
  3. Select cells to make them bold, coloured, aligned or shown as rupees, decimals or percentages. The bar below the grid shows their sum and average.
  4. Name the sheet at the top and press Save Excel (.xlsx) or CSV.

Good for

  • A monthly budget or expense list, with totals that update themselves.
  • Marks, attendance or fee lists for a class, with pass or fail worked out by IF.
  • Small shop stock and price lists, sorted A to Z or by price.
  • Quickly fixing a CSV or Excel file on a phone, without installing an app.

Frequently asked questions

Is my sheet uploaded?

No. The sheet lives in this browser tab and is kept in this browser as you work, so a reload does not lose it. It becomes a file only when you press Save Excel or CSV.

Can I open and edit an Excel file?

Yes, an .xlsx file: its first sheet opens with values, formulas, bold, colours, number formats and column widths. Charts, pivot tables, macros and other sheets are not opened. Old .xls files need saving as .xlsx first.

Which formulas work?

Arithmetic and comparisons, cell references and ranges (with $ to fix them), and SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, COUNT, COUNTA, COUNTIF, SUMIF, AVERAGEIF, IF, IFERROR, AND, OR, NOT, ROUND, ROUNDUP, ROUNDDOWN, ABS, SQRT, INT, MOD, POWER, PRODUCT, MEDIAN, CONCAT, LEN, UPPER, LOWER, TRIM, LEFT, RIGHT, TODAY and VLOOKUP. The saved Excel file keeps the formulas, so they keep working in Excel and Google Sheets.

Can I paste from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy cells there and paste here with Ctrl+V (or long-press, Paste on a phone): the rows and columns land in place. Copying here and pasting into Excel works the same way.

How do I use it on a phone?

Tap a cell to select it and tap it again to type, or type in the long box above the grid. Swipe the grid to move around. The buttons above it add rows, sort, colour and format.
