Networking careers in India and beyond

Explanation

Networking jobs start with IT support or NOC roles and grow into network administrator, network engineer, and specialist roles in security, cloud and automation. Pay in India starts low for freshers (often ₹2.5–5 LPA for NOC L1) and rises with experience and certifications. ISPs, IT services companies, system integrators, banks, data centres and managed service providers all hire. A CCNA, a homelab and the ability to explain your work clearly in an interview make the biggest difference.

The career ladder

Very few people start as a network engineer on day one. Most begin in support or monitoring, learn how real networks fail, and move up. Certifications speed this up, but experience and clear communication matter just as much.

RoleWhat you do
Desktop / IT supportFix PCs, printers, Wi-Fi and user accounts; often the first step into IT
NOC engineer L1Watch monitoring screens, spot alerts, run first checks, open tickets and escalate
NOC engineer L2 / network support engineerTroubleshoot deeper, fix common faults, make planned changes
Network administratorRun a company's network day to day: users, VLANs, Wi-Fi, firewalls, backups
Network engineerDesign and build networks, plan IP addressing, routing and upgrades
Network security engineerFirewalls, VPNs, access control, security monitoring
Cloud network engineerVPCs, VNets, VPNs, Direct Connect or ExpressRoute, hybrid designs
Network automation engineerPython, Ansible and APIs to manage networks at scale

Honest salary ranges in India

Salaries vary a lot by city (Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and the NCR usually pay more), by employer, and by shift work. These are rough ranges for 2026, in lakh rupees per annum (LPA), not promises.

StageTypical range
Fresher in IT support or NOC L1about ₹2.5–5 LPA
Network engineer with CCNA and 2–4 yearsabout ₹5–10 LPA
Senior engineer with CCNP and 5+ yearsoften well above ₹10 LPA, rising with responsibility
CCIE-level experts, architects, specialists in security or cloudmuch higher, depending on company and role
Careful: Be careful with training institutes that "guarantee" a job or a high package after a short course. Check reviews, talk to past students, and never pay a large fee for a job promise. Real employers do not ask candidates for money.

Where the jobs are

  • Internet service providers and telecoms: Airtel, Jio, BSNL, Tata Communications and regional ISPs.
  • IT services companies that run networks for clients worldwide, often with 24x7 NOCs in Indian cities.
  • System integrators that install and configure networks for hospitals, campuses, factories and government projects.
  • Banks, insurance companies and stock brokers, with large branch and data centre networks.
  • Data centre operators and cloud providers.
  • Managed service providers (MSPs) that look after many small and mid-size companies.

What to learn next

  • CCNP Enterprise: the professional level for routing, switching and wireless (a core exam plus one concentration exam).
  • CCNP Security: firewalls, VPNs and secure access.
  • Cloud networking certifications, such as AWS Certified Advanced Networking Specialty or Microsoft Azure Network Engineer Associate.
  • Automation: Python, Ansible and Cisco's automation track (formerly called DevNet; check the current name).
  • Other vendors: Juniper JNCIA-Junos, or Fortinet and Palo Alto firewall certifications. CompTIA Network+ is a vendor-neutral alternative to the CCNA, popular in some countries.

A strong CV and a homelab

Your CV should be one or two pages. Put skills you can actually show at the top: subnetting, VLANs, OSPF, ACLs, troubleshooting, Python basics. Under projects, describe labs you built: "Designed a three-site network in Packet Tracer with OSPF, NAT and ACLs; documented the IP plan." Numbers and specific verbs (configured, troubleshot, automated) beat vague words like "hard-working".

A homelab is your own practice network. It can be free (Packet Tracer, or virtual routers in GNS3 or EVE-NG) or a few second-hand switches and routers. Keep your lab files, diagrams and Python scripts on GitHub, and link it on your CV. It proves you have done the work, not just read about it.

Interviews

Networking interviews test basics deeply: the OSI model, subnetting on a whiteboard, VLANs, what happens when you type a URL into a browser, and how you would troubleshoot a user who cannot browse. Interviewers like candidates who think step by step out loud and who say "I am not sure, but I would check it like this" instead of guessing.

Tip: Practise answering the ten questions in the task below out loud, in under two minutes each. Record yourself once; it shows where you hesitate.

In real life: From helpdesk to network engineer

Arjun finished a BCA in Indore and joined an IT services company's helpdesk at ₹2.8 LPA. In the evenings he studied for the CCNA and built labs in Packet Tracer, putting his diagrams on GitHub. After passing, he moved to the company's NOC as an L1 engineer, then to L2 after a year, where he wrote small Python scripts to collect interface errors. Three years after starting, he joined a bank in Pune as a network engineer. His pay grew steadily, not overnight, and every step came from skills he could show.

Practice (0/3 done)

Task 1 · Question

Which role mainly watches monitoring screens, responds to alerts and escalates tickets?

Task 2 · Practice

Write the projects section of your CV with two networking labs you have built (or will build) in this course. For each, give a title, what you built, the technologies used and one result or number.

Task 3 · Practice

Practise these 10 common interview questions. Write (or say aloud) your own answer to each in 4 to 6 sentences, then compare with the sample answers. 1) Explain the OSI model. 2) TCP versus UDP. 3) What happens when you type a website name into a browser? 4) What is a VLAN and why use it? 5) Access port versus trunk port. 6) How does a switch learn MAC addresses? 7) What is OSPF and how does it choose a path? 8) Subnet 192.168.10.0/26: how many hosts, and what is the broadcast address? 9) What is NAT and why do we need it? 10) A user cannot browse the internet. How do you troubleshoot?
