DevOps careers and interviews in India

Explanation

DevOps work comes under many job titles: DevOps engineer, build and release engineer, cloud engineer, platform engineer, SRE and DevSecOps engineer. Freshers and juniors in India typically earn ₹4–8 LPA, rising to about ₹8–18 LPA with 2 to 5 years of experience, varying a lot by city, company and skills. A real GitHub portfolio, honest CV lines and practised answers to common questions get you hired; fake experience does not.

The roles

RoleWhat a normal day looks likeCore skills
DevOps engineerBuilds and fixes pipelines, writes Dockerfiles and Terraform, helps developers deployLinux, Git, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, one cloud, scripting
Build and release engineerOwns build systems, versioning, release branches and release daysGit in depth, CI tools, packaging, artefact repositories
Cloud engineerDesigns and runs cloud accounts, networks, IAM and costsAWS, Azure or GCP in depth, Terraform, networking
Platform engineerBuilds the internal platform and golden paths other teams useKubernetes, GitOps, developer tooling, product thinking
Site reliability engineer (SRE)Runs on-call, sets SLOs, automates toil, leads incident reviewsMonitoring, debugging, coding, distributed systems
DevSecOps engineerAdds scanning and policies to pipelines, handles secrets and findingsSecurity tooling, threat modelling, Kubernetes security

Titles are used loosely. One company's "DevOps engineer" is another's "cloud engineer". Read the responsibilities, not just the title.

Honest salary ranges in India

LPA means lakh per annum (₹1 lakh = ₹1,00,000) and usually refers to CTC (cost to company), which is more than your monthly in-hand pay after PF, tax and variable pay. These are typical ranges, not promises:

ExperienceTypical rangeNotes
Fresher or junior (0 to 2 years)₹4–8 LPAIT services entry roles at the lower end; product companies and strong projects at the higher end
Mid-level (2 to 5 years)₹8–18 LPAKubernetes, Terraform and one cloud in real production use move you up
Senior, SRE and platform rolesHigher than mid-level, often well above ₹18 LPALarge product companies and GCCs pay the most; on-call and depth matter

Pay varies a lot by city (Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram and Chennai usually pay more), by company type and by skills. Look at several current job posts and salary reports before you negotiate.

Where the jobs are

  • Product companies: e-commerce, food delivery, travel and SaaS firms that run their own platforms.
  • GCCs (global capability centres): Indian offices of foreign companies, such as banks, retailers and software firms, often in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. Many run large Kubernetes and cloud platforms.
  • IT services companies: they hire many freshers and run DevOps for clients; a common first job.
  • Startups: small teams, broad work, fast learning, less structure.
  • Fintech: UPI apps, lending and broking platforms. Regulators such as RBI and SEBI expect strong security and audits, so DevSecOps skills are valued.

Your GitHub portfolio

  • Pin your capstone repository first, with a README that has a diagram, a demo video and a "what broke" section.
  • Show a green CI badge and a sensible commit history (small commits with clear messages).
  • Add two or three smaller repositories: a Terraform module, a Helm chart, a useful script.
  • A short blog post or LinkedIn write-up about one problem you solved is worth more than ten certificates of course completion.

Writing about projects on a CV

Use one line per achievement: action verb, what you built, the tools, and an honest result. Numbers help, but only true ones from your own project.

WeakStrong
Worked on Docker and KubernetesContainerised a Node.js API with a multi-stage, non-root Dockerfile (image 950 MB to 180 MB) and deployed it to Kubernetes with Helm
Knowledge of CI/CDBuilt a GitHub Actions pipeline that lints, tests, scans with Trivy and pushes SHA-tagged images; pull request checks take 4 minutes
Familiar with monitoringAdded Prometheus metrics and a Grafana dashboard; defined a 99% success SLO for order requests with an alert linked to a runbook

Avoid "fake experience" CVs

Some agencies sell fake experience letters or offer "proxy" interviews. Do not use them. Employers run background verification: they check previous employers, payslips and your EPFO (provident fund) service history, which shows where you were actually employed. When a mismatch is found, offers are withdrawn or people are dismissed, sometimes months after joining, and using forged documents can be a criminal offence. A proxy candidate also leaves you unable to do the job you were hired for.

Be a proud fresher instead. Internships, freelance work, college projects, open-source contributions and your capstone are real experience: put them under "Projects" with links. An interviewer can check them, and you can talk about them in depth.

How DevOps interviews usually run

  1. A screening call: your background, notice period, expected pay.
  2. One or two technical rounds: Linux, networking basics, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, one cloud, scripting.
  3. Often a hands-on or troubleshooting round: fix a broken Dockerfile, debug a pod, write a small script.
  4. For senior roles, a design round: design a pipeline or a highly available deployment.
  5. A managerial or HR round: how you work with others, handle incidents and learn.
Tip: Think aloud. If you do not know an answer, say so and explain how you would find out: "I have not used Istio, but I would start with the docs and a test cluster." Interviewers trust honesty more than confident guessing. For "tell me about a time" questions, use STAR: situation, task, action, result.

The practice tasks below hold twelve common questions with model answers. Say your answers out loud, then compare.

In real life: From IT services to a GCC platform team in Hyderabad

Arjun joined an IT services company as a fresher on ₹4.5 LPA, doing Linux support for a client. In two years he automated patching scripts, moved a Jenkins job to GitHub Actions for his project, built the capstone on weekends and passed CKA. His CV lines described exactly what he built, with links. A GCC in Hyderabad hired him as a platform engineer. In the interview, he was asked to debug a pod in CrashLoopBackOff live and to explain a rollback he had done; both came straight from his real work and project. His new package was in the mid-level range for his city.

Practice (0/4 done)

Task 1 · Practice

Rewrite these three weak CV lines into strong ones using your own project (or the capstone): "Good knowledge of AWS", "Worked on Jenkins pipelines", "Hands-on with Terraform".

Task 2 · Practice

Answer these four interview questions out loud (about 2 minutes each), then compare with the model answers: (1) What happens when you run kubectl apply -f deployment.yaml? (2) What is the difference between CMD and ENTRYPOINT in a Dockerfile? (3) Explain a CI/CD pipeline you built. (4) How do you roll back a bad release?

Task 3 · Practice

Answer these four questions out loud, then compare: (5) How do you handle secrets in your pipeline and cluster? (6) A pod is in CrashLoopBackOff. How do you debug it? (7) When would you use a StatefulSet instead of a Deployment? (8) What is the difference between git merge and git rebase, and when do you use each?

Task 4 · Practice

Answer these four questions out loud, then compare: (9) What is Terraform state, and why keep it in a remote backend? (10) How do you monitor a service, and what is an SLO? (11) Blue-green versus canary deployment: what is the difference? (12) Tell me about a time something broke in production (or in your project). Use STAR.
