Cloud roles, salaries and interviews in India

Explanation

Cloud jobs range from cloud support associate and cloud administrator to cloud engineer, DevOps engineer, solutions architect, cloud security engineer and FinOps analyst. All of them need Linux, networking, scripting and one cloud learned deeply. In India, freshers in support and associate roles commonly earn about ₹3.5–7 LPA, and cloud engineers with 2–4 years about ₹7–15 LPA, varying by city, company and skills. Jobs are in IT services companies, product companies, global capability centres, startups and cloud consulting partners.

The main cloud roles

RoleWhat you doTypical entry
Cloud support associateAnswer customer or internal tickets, troubleshoot access, networking and service issues, follow runbooksFresher or 0–2 years; a foundational certificate helps
Cloud administratorManage accounts, users, backups, patching, monitoring and costs for running systems1–3 years, often from system administration
Cloud engineerBuild and change infrastructure: VPCs, compute, databases, infrastructure as code, migrations2+ years; associate certificate common
DevOps engineerCI/CD pipelines, containers, Kubernetes, automation, monitoring, working closely with developersDevelopers or admins with automation skills
Solutions architectDesign systems that meet business needs, cost and security limits; talk to customers and teamsUsually 5+ years of hands-on experience
Cloud security engineerIAM design, guardrails, detection, incident response, compliance evidenceSecurity or cloud engineers moving into security
FinOps analystTrack and reduce cloud spend: tagging, budgets, commitments, rightsizing, reports for financeCloud or finance background with data skills

Skills every role needs

  • Linux: the command line, files and permissions, processes, services, logs, SSH. Most cloud servers run Linux.
  • Networking: IP addresses and CIDR, subnets, routing, DNS, HTTP and TLS, ports and firewalls. Many cloud problems are network problems.
  • Scripting: Python or Bash to automate tasks, plus reading JSON and YAML. PowerShell helps in Azure-heavy companies.
  • One cloud, deeply: pick AWS, Azure or Google Cloud and know it well. Learning a second cloud is much faster once you know one, because the ideas map across.
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform or CloudFormation), Git, and basic containers.
  • Communication: writing clear tickets, documents and incident updates. In support and consulting roles this matters as much as technical skill.

Honest salary ranges in India

Salaries are usually quoted as LPA (lakhs per annum, the yearly cost to company). These are typical ranges, not promises, and they vary by city, company, skills and how well you interview:

  • Freshers in cloud support or associate roles: about ₹3.5–7 LPA. Mass recruiters in IT services sit at the lower end; product companies and some global capability centres pay more.
  • Cloud engineers with 2–4 years of experience: about ₹7–15 LPA.
  • Senior engineers, DevOps leads, security specialists and architects: higher, often well above ₹15 LPA, with wide variation.

Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Gurugram and Noida usually pay more than smaller cities, but living costs are higher too. Remote roles for overseas companies exist but are competitive.

Where the jobs are

  • IT services companies: large employers that run cloud migrations and operations for clients worldwide. Good training and many fresher openings.
  • Product companies: Indian and global software companies running their own platforms on the cloud.
  • Global capability centres (GCCs): in-house technology centres of global banks, retailers and manufacturers, concentrated in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai.
  • Startups: wide responsibility early, often AWS-first, less structure.
  • Cloud consulting partners: firms certified by AWS, Microsoft or Google that deliver projects for customers; they value certifications highly because partner status depends on them.

How interviews usually run

Expect an online test or HR screening, one or two technical rounds and a manager or HR round. Technical rounds mix fundamentals (Linux, networking), cloud services, a scenario ("design a highly available web app"), troubleshooting ("an EC2 instance cannot reach the internet: what do you check?") and your projects. Answer in a structure: say what you would check first and why, then the next step. Saying "I do not know, but here is how I would find out" is better than guessing.

What to learn next

  • The DevOps course on this site: CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, monitoring.
  • Kubernetes in depth (EKS, AKS or GKE) and the Certified Kubernetes Administrator exam if you go the DevOps route.
  • A security specialty, such as AWS Certified Security – Specialty, once you have associate-level experience.
  • A second cloud at foundational or associate level, since many Indian companies are multi-cloud.
Careful: Common mistakes: (1) Collecting five certificates with no projects and no Linux skills. (2) Paying large fees to agencies that promise "guaranteed placement". Check reviews and never pay for a job offer. (3) Listing every service on your résumé; interviewers will ask about each one. List what you can explain. (4) Not practising aloud: explaining a design clearly is a skill you build by doing it.

In real life: Three paths from the same college batch

Three friends from a college in Nagpur graduate in the same year. Aman joins an IT services company as a cloud support associate at ₹4 LPA, passes SAA-C03 in his first year, and moves to a cloud engineer role at a GCC in Pune at ₹11 LPA after three years. Fatima starts in a startup as a junior DevOps engineer at ₹6 LPA, learns Kubernetes on the job and becomes the go-to person for the CI/CD platform. Rohit, a commerce graduate, combines AZ-900 and Excel skills to join a consulting partner's FinOps team, building monthly cost reports for clients. None of them followed exactly the same path, but all of them combined one cloud learned well with real projects.

Practice (0/3 done)

Task 1 · Question

Which role focuses on tracking and reducing cloud spend with tags, budgets and commitments?

Task 2 · Code · Python

Write skills_gap(required, have) that returns the skills in required that are missing from have, in the order of required. Compare without caring about upper or lower case, but return the names exactly as written in required.

Task 3 · Practice

Prepare spoken answers for these six interview questions, then say them aloud in under two minutes each: (1) Explain the shared responsibility model. (2) What is the difference between a security group and a network ACL? (3) An EC2 instance in a private subnet cannot reach the internet. What do you check? (4) How would you design a highly available web application on AWS? (5) How do you keep cloud costs under control? (6) Tell me about a project you built.
