The CCNA 200-301 exam and your study plan

Explanation

The CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is earned by passing one exam, 200-301, which lasts 120 minutes and covers six domains from network fundamentals to automation. You book it through Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online, and it stays valid for three years. A 12 to 16 week plan built on this course, with daily subnetting practice and lots of Packet Tracer labs, is a realistic way to pass.

What the CCNA is

CCNA stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate. It is the best-known entry-level networking certification, and many job adverts for network support and NOC roles in India ask for it. You earn it by passing a single exam, 200-301 CCNA. There are no formal prerequisites, but Cisco suggests some hands-on experience, which is what the labs in this course give you.

The exam format

  • Length: 120 minutes.
  • Question types: multiple choice (one or several answers), drag and drop, and simulations or labs where you configure or troubleshoot devices in a simulated command line.
  • You cannot go back to a previous question once you move on, so answer each one fully before clicking next.
  • Cisco does not publish a fixed number of questions or a fixed pass mark. For the current format, rules and languages, check the official exam page before you book.

Careful: These are the weights of blueprint version 1.1, current when this lesson was written. Cisco updates its blueprints from time to time, so download the current exam topics from cisco.com before you plan your revision.

Booking, price and validity

You book the exam with Pearson VUE, Cisco's testing partner. You can sit it at a test centre (there are many in Indian cities) or online from home with a webcam and a proctor (a supervisor) watching. Online exams have strict rules about your room, desk and internet, so read them first. The price is around US$300 plus taxes; check the current price in rupees when you book. The certification is valid for three years. To keep it, you recertify before it expires, either by passing a qualifying exam or by earning continuing education credits; check Cisco's recertification page for the current options.

Where to practise labs

Cisco Packet Tracer is a free network simulator. You get it by signing up for a free course at Cisco Networking Academy (netacad.com). It covers almost every CCNA lab. Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) runs real Cisco operating system images for more realistic practice; it has paid editions and, at the time of writing, a free edition limited to a small number of nodes, so check the current options. Cisco DevNet sandboxes let you try REST APIs for free.

Exam-day tips

  • Sleep well, eat, and reach the centre 30 minutes early with the ID that matches your Pearson VUE profile exactly.
  • Read every question twice; words like "not", "best" and "two" change the answer.
  • Watch the clock: you cannot go back, so do not spend 15 minutes on one question.
  • In labs, check your work with show commands before you click next, and save the configuration if the task asks.
  • Write subnetting tables on the provided board at the start if that helps you.

Common mistakes

  • Only watching videos. Watching feels like learning, but the exam tests whether you can do it. Do a lab for every topic.
  • Slow subnetting. You need to subnet in under a minute. Practise ten problems a day until it is automatic.
  • Ignoring the smaller domains: automation and IP services together are 20 percent of the blueprint.
  • Memorising dumps of leaked questions. It breaks Cisco's exam rules, can get the certification revoked, and leaves you unable to do the job.

In real life: Priya's 16 weeks

Priya works in desktop support at a hospital in Jaipur. She studies one hour on weekdays and three hours on Saturdays, following this course for 14 weeks, then does two weeks of timed practice. She keeps a notebook of every mistake she makes in practice tests and redoes those labs in Packet Tracer. She passes the CCNA at a Pearson VUE centre on her first attempt and moves to the hospital's network team three months later.

Practice (0/3 done)

Task 1 · Question

Which CCNA 200-301 domain has the largest weight in blueprint version 1.1?

Task 2 · Code · Python

Write study_hours(total, weights) that splits your total study hours by the exam weights. weights is a dict of domain name to percent. Return a dict with the same keys and the hours for each, rounded to 1 decimal place. Example: with 100 hours, a 25% domain gets 25.0 hours.

Task 3 · Practice

Write your own CCNA study plan. Say how many hours a week you can study, your target exam month, and what you will do each week. Include labs, subnetting practice and timed practice exams.
