Projects and careers with C

Explanation

C leads to embedded software and firmware engineering, Linux kernel and device-driver work, systems programming (databases, networking, compilers), automotive software (often with AUTOSAR and MISRA C) and IoT development. Build a few hardware and systems projects, publish them with clear READMEs, learn Linux and debugging tools well, and keep salary expectations honest.

Roles that use C

RoleWhat you doTypical employers
Embedded software / firmware engineerProgram microcontrollers: drivers, control loops, communicationConsumer electronics, industrial automation, medical devices, IoT start-ups
Automotive software engineerECU software for engines, brakes, infotainment; AUTOSAR, MISRA C, ISO 26262Automotive OEMs and their tier-1 suppliers
Linux kernel / device-driver developerDrivers for hardware, kernel features, board support packagesSemiconductor companies, networking and storage firms
Systems programmerDatabases, networking stacks, compilers, operating-system componentsProduct companies, infrastructure software
IoT developerFirmware plus cloud connectivity (MQTT), low-power designSmart-home, agriculture-tech and energy companies

India has a large and growing base of semiconductor design centres, automotive software teams and electronics manufacturing, so embedded C skills are in steady demand, especially combined with knowledge of microcontrollers, communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN) and Linux.

Portfolio projects

  1. A command-line tool on Linux (for example a CSV report generator or a log analyser) with a Makefile, tests and a clean valgrind run.
  2. A data-structure library (dynamic array, hash map, linked list) with documented APIs and tests under sanitizers.
  3. A tiny shell or a simple memory allocator: classic systems projects that show deep understanding.
  4. A hardware project on Arduino, ESP32 or STM32: a temperature logger, a smart switch or a CAN-bus reader, with a circuit diagram and a short video.

Skills that make you stand out

  • Reading datasheets and reference manuals; using an oscilloscope or logic analyser (for embedded).
  • Communication protocols: UART, SPI, I2C, CAN; basic networking (TCP/UDP sockets).
  • Linux command line, Git, gdb, valgrind and sanitizers.
  • An RTOS (FreeRTOS or Zephyr) and, for automotive, an awareness of AUTOSAR and MISRA C.
  • Next languages: C++ (very common in embedded and systems) and Rust (growing in systems and embedded work).

Honest pay expectations

Pay varies a lot by city, company type and specialisation. As a rough guide in 2026, freshers in embedded and C roles often start around ₹3.5–7 LPA; semiconductor and product companies may pay more to strong candidates, and experienced firmware, driver and automotive engineers command significantly higher salaries. Treat any figure, including these, as a range rather than a promise, and compare offers on the work and learning as well as the money.

Careful: Be careful with paid "embedded placement guarantee" courses and with offers that ask you to pay a fee or sign a large bond for training. Genuine employers do not charge candidates for interviews or offer letters; read any bond terms before signing and verify the company independently.
Think of it like this: A C career is like learning to repair engines rather than only driving cars: fewer people do it, it takes longer to learn, but every car (device, operating system, database) needs someone who understands what happens under the bonnet.
Tip: Document hardware projects with photos, a wiring diagram and a two-minute video. Interviewers remember "the student who built a CAN-bus reader for their uncle's tractor" far more than any certificate.

In real life: From a final-year project to a firmware job

An electronics graduate from Pune built a solar-pump controller for a local farm on an STM32 board: it read soil moisture and tank level, ran the pump on a schedule, and sent status over GSM. In interviews he explained his interrupt design, how he debounced the float switch, and a watchdog reset he added after the device hung in the field. That project, more than his marks, got him a firmware role at an industrial-automation company.

Practice (0/3 done)

Task 1 · Practice

Plan three C portfolio projects (at least one with hardware or a simulator such as Wokwi). For each, write the problem, the main features, the tools (gcc, make, gdb, sanitizers, the board), how you will test it, and what you will show in the README (photos, diagram, video).

Task 2 · Practice

Read three real job descriptions for embedded or C developer roles in India. List the skills they share, mark which you already have from this course, and make a 30-day plan for the two most important missing skills.

Task 3 · Question

Which project would most impress an embedded-systems interviewer?
