Projects and a Java career

Explanation

Java leads to backend developer, Spring Boot microservices, Android (with Kotlin), QA automation with Selenium and big-data roles. Build three solid projects (for example a library manager, a Spring Boot expense API with a database, and a multithreaded file processor), publish them on GitHub with good READMEs, prepare for the usual interview rounds, and keep salary expectations honest.

Roles that use Java

RoleMain skillsTypical employers
Java backend developerCore Java, Spring Boot, SQL, REST, GitIT services companies, product companies, banks, fintech
Microservices engineerSpring Boot, Docker, Kafka, cloud basicsE-commerce, travel, fintech platforms
Android developerKotlin first (Java helps), Android SDKApp companies and start-ups
QA automation engineerJava + Selenium/Appium, TestNG/JUnit, CIAlmost every software company
Data/big-data engineerJava/Scala, Kafka, Spark, SQLAnalytics, telecom, e-commerce

Three portfolio projects

  1. Core Java: a library management console app with classes, collections, file storage and JUnit tests.
  2. Spring Boot: an expense-tracker REST API with PostgreSQL or MySQL, validation, layered design, JPA, tests and an OpenAPI page; deployed on a free tier or run with Docker.
  3. Concurrency: a multithreaded file processor that reads many CSV files with an ExecutorService (or virtual threads), aggregates results, and reports timing.

Depth beats quantity. A project with tests, clean commits, a README with screenshots and setup steps, and a short "what I would improve" section shows more than ten copied tutorials.

Resume lines that work

output
Weak: Made a Spring Boot project.
Strong: Built an expense-tracker REST API (Spring Boot 3, Java 21, PostgreSQL) with
validation, layered architecture and 45 JUnit/Mockito tests; Dockerised; README at github.com/you/expenses.
Action + technology + measurable detail + proof.

Typical hiring process

  1. Online assessment: aptitude (at many service companies), Java MCQs (output prediction), and 1–2 coding problems.
  2. Technical round 1: core Java concepts, OOP, collections, a coding problem.
  3. Technical round 2: Spring Boot, SQL, project discussion, sometimes simple system design.
  4. Managerial / HR round: communication, teamwork, notice period, salary.

Honest pay expectations

Salaries vary widely by city, company type and skill. As a rough guide in 2026, freshers in Java roles at large IT services companies often start around ₹3.5–6 LPA, while product companies and well-funded start-ups may offer ₹6–15 LPA or more to strong candidates. With 3–5 years of solid Spring Boot and system experience, pay usually rises substantially. Treat every number online, including these, as a range, not a promise.

Certifications

Certifications are optional. Oracle offers "Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE Developer" exams for recent LTS versions (for example Java SE 17 and Java SE 21); check Oracle's education site for the current exam codes and syllabus. A certificate can help freshers clear resume filters, but projects and interview performance matter more.

Careful: Beware of offers that ask you to pay for a "guaranteed placement", training bonds with large penalties you have not read, or fake offer letters. Genuine employers do not charge candidates for interviews or offer letters. Verify companies on their official sites.
Think of it like this: Your GitHub is like a tailor's shop window: three well-made pieces displayed neatly convince customers more than a list of every shirt ever stitched.
Tip: Keep coding one hour a day after this course: 30 minutes on your project, 30 minutes on DSA or Spring practice. Consistency over three months beats cramming before interviews.

In real life: From college project to backend job

A B.Tech graduate from Coimbatore turned his final-year project into a Spring Boot API for a local tuition centre (students, batches, monthly fees, overdue reminders), with PostgreSQL, tests and Docker. In interviews he explained one real bug (two reminders for the same fee) and how a unique database constraint plus a test fixed it. That story mattered more than his percentage.

Practice (0/3 done)

Task 1 · Practice

Plan your three Java portfolio projects. For each, write the problem it solves, the main features, the tech stack, how you will test it and how someone can run it (README steps).

Task 2 · Practice

Rewrite three of your resume bullet points with the pattern: action verb + what you built + technology + a measurable detail + proof.

Task 3 · Question

Which makes a Java portfolio project most convincing to an interviewer?
