Careers with C++ and your next steps

Explanation

C++ jobs are in game development, embedded and automotive software, browsers and operating systems, databases, trading systems, telecom and high-performance computing. Fresher pay in India varies widely; most roles start around ₹4–10 LPA, with a small number of very selective firms paying much more. A portfolio of 2–3 solid projects plus good DSA skills is the best way in.

Honest view of jobs and pay in India

Many fresher openings are in service and product companies that test DSA in any language; C++ is a strong choice for those rounds. Dedicated C++ roles are more common in embedded/automotive (Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai), gaming studios and semiconductor or networking companies. As a rough guide, most fresher roles pay around ₹4–10 LPA; some product, semiconductor and trading firms pay much more but hire very few people through tough selection. Pay varies a lot by city, company and skill, so check recent offers on several sources rather than trusting one number.

Careful: Be careful with "guaranteed placement" courses and big salary claims. No course can guarantee a job. Skills you can show (projects on GitHub, contest ratings, clear explanations in interviews) are what get offers.

Portfolio project ideas

  • A command-line bank or library system with classes, smart pointers, file save/load and unit tests, built with CMake.
  • A small 2D game with SFML or raylib: game loop, collision, score, levels.
  • A multithreaded file indexer: walk folders with std::filesystem, count words in parallel, print the top words.
  • A tiny key-value store or an LRU cache with a hash map and a linked list, with benchmarks.
  • An HTTP client or chat app over sockets (on Linux) to learn networking.
Think of it like this: A portfolio is like a cricketer's scorecard. Saying "I am a good batsman" counts for little; a record of innings played and runs scored speaks for itself. Two or three finished, well-explained projects are worth more than ten half-done ones.

A 12-week plan after this course

  1. Weeks 1–4: DSA daily (CSES or a structured sheet), one contest a week, upsolve everything.
  2. Weeks 5–8: build one portfolio project with CMake, tests (GoogleTest or Catch2) and a clear README.
  3. Weeks 9–10: read about operating systems basics (processes, threads, memory) and computer networks basics.
  4. Weeks 11–12: mock interviews, revise this course's interview topic, apply widely.

  • Talks from CppCon and other conferences on YouTube (many are free).
  • Reading well-known open-source C++ code once you are comfortable.
Tip: Pair C++ with one more language. Python for scripting and tools is the most common combination; for embedded roles, learn C deeply as well.

In real life: From college to an automotive software job

Priya, an electronics student from Coimbatore, learnt C++ in her third year, solved about 250 problems on CSES and CodeChef, and built a CAN-bus message simulator with classes, threads and CMake for her final project. In interviews at an automotive software company in Bengaluru she explained RAII and why she used a lock-free queue only after measuring. Her projects, not a certificate, made the difference.

output
// A line from her README that interviewers asked about:
// "Messages are produced by 4 sensor threads into a bounded queue
//  protected by a mutex + condition_variable; measured 120k msgs/s on a laptop."
Specific, measured claims make projects credible.

Which field commonly combines C++ with microcontrollers, C and real-time operating systems?

Task 2 · Question

Which is the strongest evidence of skill for a fresher C++ role?

Task 3 · Practice

Write your own 12-week plan using the template from this topic: name the DSA source you will follow, the contest you will join weekly, one portfolio project with its features, and the date you will start applying. Put the project idea in a README draft with "Problem, Features, How to build (CMake), What I learnt".
