Explanation
Roles that use JavaScript
| Role | Main tools | What you build |
|---|---|---|
| Frontend developer | React / Angular / Vue, TypeScript, CSS | Web apps, dashboards, e-commerce sites |
| Backend (Node.js) developer | Node, Express/Fastify/NestJS, SQL, Redis | APIs, payment and order services |
| Full-stack developer | Both of the above, plus deployment | Complete products, often at start-ups |
| Mobile developer | React Native, TypeScript | Android and iOS apps from one codebase |
| QA automation engineer | Playwright, Cypress, Jest/Vitest | Automated test suites for web apps |
Three portfolio projects
- A data-heavy front end: an expense tracker or a stock-watchlist dashboard with charts, filters, search (debounced) and local storage.
- A Node.js API: a booking or orders API with validation, error handling, tests and a database, deployed on a free tier.
- A full-stack app combining both, with login, for example a clinic appointment booker or a tuition-class fee manager.
Depth beats quantity. One project with tests, clean commits, error handling and a live link impresses more than ten tutorial copies. Solve a real problem you or someone you know has; it gives you a story to tell in interviews.
GitHub and README
- Pin your best 3 repositories on your GitHub profile.
- Every README: what it does (one line), a screenshot or GIF, live link, tech used, how to run it, what you would improve.
- Small, meaningful commits ("Add debounce to search box"), not one giant "final" commit.
- No secrets in the repository (module 11).
Resume lines that work
Weak: Made a shopping website using React.
Strong: Built a React + TypeScript storefront with debounced product search and a cart
persisted in localStorage; added 40 Vitest tests; deployed on Vercel (link).Typical hiring process in India
- Online assessment: MCQs (output prediction, concepts) plus 1–3 coding problems, often on HackerRank, HackerEarth or a similar platform.
- Technical round 1: JavaScript concepts and a DSA problem.
- Technical round 2 / machine coding: build a small feature in 60–90 minutes, or a system/front-end design discussion for experienced roles.
- Hiring manager or HR round: projects, teamwork, salary and notice period.
Honest pay expectations
Pay varies a lot by city, company type and skill. As a rough guide in 2026: freshers in JavaScript roles at service companies often start around ₹3.5–6 LPA, and at product companies and well-funded start-ups around ₹6–15 LPA or more for strong candidates. Developers with 3–5 years of solid experience commonly earn well above that. Treat any single number you see online, including these, as a range, not a promise.

In real life: From college project to first job
A BCA graduate from Indore built a clinic appointment app with a React front end and a Node.js API, wrote tests for the booking rules, deployed it, and got a real clinic to use it for two months. In interviews she talked about the double-booking bug she found and fixed with a test. That concrete story mattered more than her marks.
Practice (0/3 done)
Plan your three portfolio projects. For each, write: the problem it solves, who would use it, the main features, the tech stack, and how you will test and deploy it.
Rewrite three of your resume bullet points using the pattern: action verb + what you built + technology + a measurable detail + proof (link).
A "placement agency" asks for ₹25,000 to guarantee a JavaScript developer job. What is the right response?
