Android jobs in India
Explanation
Where Android developers work
| Type | What it is like |
|---|---|
| Product companies (fintech, e-commerce, travel, food delivery, edtech) | Own one app used by millions; strong focus on quality, performance and architecture; competitive hiring |
| IT service companies | Build apps for clients; structured training; many projects and technologies |
| Startups | Small teams, broad responsibility, fast learning; may be less stable |
| Agencies and freelancing | Many small apps for local businesses; you need client communication and estimation skills |
Roles and titles
- Android Developer / Android Engineer: the most common title.
- Mobile Developer: may also cover Flutter or iOS.
- Software Development Engineer (SDE) with Android: at larger product companies; interviews include data structures and algorithms.
- Senior / Lead Android Engineer: architecture, mentoring, performance and release ownership.
What job posts ask for
- Kotlin (strong), including coroutines and Flow.
- Jetpack Compose; many companies also still have XML View screens.
- Architecture: MVVM, clean layering, dependency injection (Hilt or Koin).
- Data: Room, Retrofit/OkHttp, JSON, offline handling.
- Git, code review, and basic CI.
- Testing (unit and UI), Play Store publishing, crash monitoring.
- For product companies: data structures and algorithms, and system design for senior roles.
An honest word on pay
Pay varies a lot with city (Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, NCR and Mumbai usually pay more), company type, and your demonstrated skill. As a rough, approximate guide only: freshers often start around ₹3.5–7 LPA (higher at top product companies), and developers with 3 to 5 years of strong experience commonly see ₹10–20 LPA or more. Freelance rates for a small business app range widely. Use these numbers only as orientation and check current postings and salary surveys.
Getting the first job
- A published app on the Play Store (even a small one) is strong proof you can finish things.
- A GitHub profile with 2 to 4 clean projects that use modern Android (Compose, MVVM, Room, Retrofit, tests).
- Internships and open-source contributions count as experience.
- Practise explaining your projects: why you chose an architecture, what went wrong, what you would improve.
- For product companies, practise data structures and algorithms in Kotlin.
Common mistakes
- Listing 20 technologies on the CV with no projects that prove them.
- Only tutorial clones (the same weather app everyone builds) with no personal touch.
- Ignoring fundamentals because "Android is just UI". Interviews test Kotlin, threading and architecture.
- Applying only to big companies. Startups and service companies are good places to grow.

In real life: From commerce graduate to Android developer
Rahul, a B.Com graduate from Indore, studies Android for nine months in the evenings. He builds an expense tracker (Room, Compose, charts), a bus timings app using a public API with offline support, and publishes a small app for his uncle's hardware shop on the Play Store. He applies to startups and service companies, explains his apps in detail in interviews, and gets an Android developer role at a Pune startup.
