Certification paths: eJPT, CEH, PNPT, OSCP
Explanation
Why certifications help
A certification is a recognised proof that you have a certain skill level. In security, especially for getting a first job, certifications help your CV pass filters and show employers you are serious. They are not a substitute for real skill or a portfolio, but they open doors, particularly early on.
A practical ladder
| Cert | Level | Style |
|---|---|---|
| eJPT (INE) | Entry | Hands-on, beginner-friendly practical |
| CEH (EC-Council) | Entry/mid | Broad knowledge; well recognised by HR; has a practical option |
| PNPT (TCM Security) | Mid | Fully practical: a real test plus a written report |
| OSCP (OffSec) | Advanced | Famously hard, long hands-on exam; highly respected |
A common path for a beginner on a budget: build skills on free labs (module 2), take eJPT to prove hands-on basics, then aim for PNPT or OSCP as you grow. CEH is useful where employers or government roles specifically ask for it. There are also defensive and foundational certs (like CompTIA Security+) that pair well if you want broader security roles.
Match the cert to your goal
Do not collect certifications blindly. Look at the jobs you want and the certs their listings ask for. For hands-on pentesting roles, practical certs (PNPT, OSCP) carry weight because they prove you can actually do the work. For broader or HR-filtered roles, CEH or Security+ may matter more. Spend your money where it moves you toward your target job.
Honest expectations (India)
With solid skills, a portfolio and an entry cert, fresher security/SOC and junior pentest roles in India often pay roughly ₹4–8 LPA, varying a lot by city, company and your demonstrated ability; it rises with experience and respected practical certs. Certifications help, but employers increasingly want proof you can do the work — which is why your lab write-ups and legal findings matter.

In real life: A budget-friendly plan
A graduate with no money for expensive courses spends six months on free labs (TryHackMe, PortSwigger, DVWA), keeping notes on every exercise. He takes eJPT to prove hands-on basics and lists his lab write-ups on a simple blog and GitHub. He applies for junior SOC and pentest roles, and in interviews walks through his findings. The entry cert got his CV read; the portfolio got him the offer.
