Certifications: what, when and why
Explanation
Why certifications (and their limits)
Recruiters and HR systems often filter CVs by certification names. A certificate shows you studied a defined body of knowledge and passed an exam. But it does not prove you can triage an alert at 3 am. Combine certificates with a lab and portfolio (next lesson).
A sensible order for a SOC / blue-team career
| Stage | Certification | Who runs it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | CC: Certified in Cybersecurity | ISC2 | Entry level, no experience required. ISC2 has run offers of free training and exam vouchers; check isc2.org for current offers |
| Start | Security+ (exam SY0-701) | CompTIA | Widely recognised foundation exam; multiple-choice and performance-based questions. Exam codes are refreshed every few years, so check comptia.org |
| Analyst | CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst+) | CompTIA | Focused on SOC work: detection, analysis, response. Check the current exam code on comptia.org |
| Vendor (optional) | Microsoft SC-900, then SC-200 | Microsoft | SC-900 is fundamentals; SC-200 is Security Operations Analyst (Sentinel, Defender) |
| Later | CISSP | ISC2 | Senior, broad certification: 8 domains, needs 5 years' work experience (see below) |
CISSP experience rule
To become CISSP certified, you need at least five years of cumulative, paid, full-time work experience in two or more of the eight CISSP domains. A four-year college degree (or a regional equivalent) or an approved credential can count as one year, reducing it to four. If you pass the exam without the experience, you become an Associate of ISC2 and have up to six years to earn it. This is why CISSP is a "later" certification.
Other paths
- GRC and audit: ISACA CISA (auditing) and CISM (management), ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor courses from accredited training bodies.
- Cloud: AWS, Microsoft (AZ-500 for Azure security) and Google Cloud security certifications, after a cloud fundamentals level.
- Offensive (with ethics and permission always): EC-Council CEH, OffSec OSCP, and others. These suit penetration testing roles.
- Free and low-cost learning: vendor learning paths (Microsoft Learn, AWS Skill Builder), the Google Cybersecurity Certificate on Coursera, and TryHackMe or LetsDefend learning paths, which give completion certificates but are not industry certifications.
How to prepare
- Download the official exam objectives from the vendor site; they list every topic.
- Study with one main resource plus the official objectives, not ten resources.
- Do labs for every practical objective.
- Take timed practice tests, review every wrong answer, and note the reason.
- Book the exam date in advance; a deadline helps.
Money and honesty
- Exam vouchers are priced in US dollars or local currency and change over time; many cost tens of thousands of rupees. Check the official price before paying anyone.
- Buy vouchers only from the vendor or its listed partners. Fake "discount vouchers" are a known scam.
- Never use "exam dumps" (leaked real questions). It breaks the exam agreement and can get your certificate revoked; it also leaves you unable to do the job.
- Most certifications need renewal: continuing education credits and a yearly fee.
Common mistakes
- Starting with CISSP or an advanced exam with no experience.
- Choosing an offensive certificate when you want a SOC job.
- Studying from outdated material for an older exam code.

In real life: A realistic 12-month plan
Rohit, a final-year B.Sc. student in Lucknow, finishes this course and gets ISC2 CC in month 3. He builds a home lab with Sysmon and Wazuh, writes up five investigations on GitHub, and passes CompTIA Security+ in month 8. With both on his CV and his lab write-ups to discuss, he gets SOC L1 interviews at two MSSPs and an offer in month 11. He plans CySA+ after a year on the job and CISSP after five years of experience.
def cissp_eligible(years, has_waiver):
return years >= 5 or (has_waiver and years >= 4)
print(cissp_eligible(1, True), cissp_eligible(4, True), cissp_eligible(4, False))Practice (0/3 done)
How much work experience does CISSP require?
Write cissp_status(years, has_waiver, passed_exam). Required experience is 5 years, or 4 with a waiver. Return "eligible" if passed_exam and experience is enough, "associate" if passed_exam but experience is not enough, and "study" if the exam is not passed.
Open the official exam objectives for CompTIA Security+ (or ISC2 CC) from the vendor site. Make a table of the domains with their weightings, mark each one as strong / medium / weak for you, and list which modules of this course cover each.
