Career paths in cyber security

Explanation

Cyber security has many paths, not just "hacker". Most people start in a SOC as an L1 analyst, or in IT support or networking, and later move to incident response, threat hunting, detection engineering, cloud security, application security, GRC or penetration testing. Pick a direction, but expect your first job to be a broad one.

Why knowing the map helps

Many beginners only know two roles: "ethical hacker" and "security analyst". In reality, security teams need many kinds of people. Knowing the options helps you choose what to study, which certifications to take, and how to describe yourself in interviews.

Common roles

RoleWhat you doGood starting background
SOC analyst (L1, then L2)Monitor alerts, triage, investigate, escalateThis course, networking basics, Windows/Linux logs
Incident responder / DFIRHandle incidents end to end, collect and analyse evidence (digital forensics)SOC experience, Windows internals
Threat hunter / detection engineerFind hidden attackers, write and test detection rulesSOC experience, SIEM queries, scripting
Security engineerBuild and run security tools: EDR, firewalls, SIEM, email securitySystem or network admin experience
Cloud security engineerSecure AWS/Azure/GCP accounts, IAM, posture, cloud loggingCloud admin or DevOps experience
Application security (AppSec) engineerSecure code reviews, testing apps, helping developers fix bugsSoftware development
Penetration tester / red teamAuthorised testing of systems to find weaknesses, with written scopeStrong networking, Linux, web; ethics and permission always
GRC analyst / IT auditorPolicies, risk registers, ISO 27001, DPDP compliance, auditsCommerce, audit, IT or management background welcome
Identity and access management (IAM) engineerRun SSO, MFA, access reviews, privileged accessWindows/AD or cloud identity admin
Security architect, CISODesign security for the whole organisation, lead teams and strategyMany years across several of the above

Typical progressions

  • SOC L1 (0–2 years) → SOC L2 / incident responder (2–5 years) → threat hunter, detection engineer or SOC lead.
  • IT support or system admin → security engineer → security architect.
  • Developer → AppSec engineer → product security lead.
  • Auditor or compliance associate → GRC analyst → GRC manager or risk lead.
  • Network engineer → network security engineer → cloud security or architect.

Who hires in India

  • Managed security service providers (MSSPs) that run 24×7 SOCs for many clients, often the biggest hirers of freshers.
  • Large IT services and consulting firms with security practices.
  • Banks, insurers, fintechs and payment companies (regulated by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI).
  • Product and SaaS companies.
  • Global capability centres (GCCs) of foreign companies.
  • Government and public sector bodies, such as CERT-In, state SOCs and police cyber cells, usually through their own recruitment processes.

Skills that matter for every path

  • Networking and operating systems (Modules 2 and 3).
  • Clear writing: tickets, reports and handover notes.
  • Scripting, especially Python, for automation.
  • Curiosity and calm under pressure.
  • Ethics: you will see private data and powerful tools.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing only "hacking" and skipping fundamentals. Interviewers test basics first.
  • Collecting certificates without any hands-on lab work.
  • Ignoring GRC and cloud roles, which are growing and less crowded.
  • Paying for courses that promise "guaranteed placement" or ask for money to get a job. Real employers do not charge you to hire you.

In real life: Three different starts

Priya, a B.Com graduate in Indore, started as a GRC associate at a consulting firm, preparing ISO 27001 evidence; two years later she leads DPDP readiness projects. Arjun, a BCA graduate in Bhubaneswar, joined an MSSP as a SOC L1 analyst on night shifts and moved to incident response after three years. Fatima, a Java developer in Hyderabad, moved into application security by learning the OWASP Top 10 and doing secure code reviews for her own team. All three are "in cyber security".

Practice (0/3 done)

Task 1 · Question

Which role mainly writes policies, keeps risk registers and prepares for ISO 27001 audits?

Task 2 · Code · Python

Write skill_gaps(role, mine) where ROLE_SKILLS (given) maps a role to a set of skills and mine is a set of your skills. Return a sorted list of skills you still need for that role. For an unknown role, raise KeyError (the default dict behaviour is fine).

Task 3 · Practice

Choose a target role for your first or next job. Write: why it suits you, the 5 key skills it needs, which of them you already have (with proof), and a 3-month plan for the rest.
