Exam strategy and lab habits

Explanation

Hands-on exams are won with habits: read every task fully, do the quick ones first, make everything persistent, verify as you go, and reboot before the end to prove it all comes back. A small checklist of commands that verify each kind of task saves points you would otherwise lose to small mistakes.

Before the clock starts

Read the instructions page carefully: host names, passwords, which machine is which, and any rule such as "do not change the root password of serverb". A surprising number of failures come from doing a perfect task on the wrong machine.

Time and order

  • Skim all tasks first (a few minutes). Mark each as quick, medium or hard.
  • Do quick tasks first: users, groups, permissions, cron, time zone, tuned. Banking those points early calms nerves.
  • Watch for dependencies: if a later task needs a repository or network setting from an earlier one, do that first.
  • Never spend more than about 10 to 15 minutes stuck on one task. Write down where you were and come back.
  • Keep the last 15 to 20 minutes for a full reboot and verification.

Kind of taskMake it permanent withVerify with
Servicesystemctl enable --nowsystemctl is-enabled, is-active
Mount / swap/etc/fstab line (UUID or LV path)mount -a, findmnt --verify, swapon --show
Firewall--permanent then --reloadfirewall-cmd --list-all
SELinux labelsemanage fcontext + restoreconls -Z, matchpathcon or restorecon -n -v
SELinux booleansetsebool -Pgetsebool name
Networknmcli connection (autoconnect yes)ip -br a, ip route, after nmcli con up
Boot targetsystemctl set-defaultsystemctl get-default
Container serviceQuadlet or unit file + enable-lingersystemctl --user status, loginctl show-user

Verify like a grader

Graders check from the outside. Do the same: test a web server with curl from another machine, not only from itself; log in with ssh as the new user; read a file as the user who should (and should not) have access with sudo -u user cat file. If a task names a file path, check it with ls -l exactly at that path.

output
Final 20 minutes:
1. Save and close every editor.
2. Reboot every machine you changed (one at a time if one depends on another).
3. Re-run the verify commands for each task.
4. Fix anything that did not come back, then reboot that machine again.
A reboot that hangs on a bad fstab line costs more than one task. Leave time to fix it.

Common mistakes

  • Doing the task on the wrong host. Check the prompt before every command.
  • Typos in names: "lv_data" instead of "lvdata", "/date" instead of "/data". Copy names exactly from the task.
  • Breaking the boot near the end with an untested fstab edit and no time left to fix it.
  • Panicking after one hard task. Move on; the score is the total.
Tip: Practise with the same habits you will use on the day: same order, same checks, same reboot at the end. Habits are what survive exam nerves.

In real life: Two attempts, one lesson

Arjun, a support engineer in Chennai, failed his first RHCSA attempt by a few points. He had done almost every task but had not rebooted at the end; a missing fstab entry and a firewall rule without --permanent cost him. On the second attempt he left 20 minutes for reboot and verification, found and fixed one similar mistake, and passed comfortably.

Practice (0/3 done)

Task 1 · Question

You added a firewall rule without --permanent and finished the exam without rebooting. What happens at grading?

Task 2 · Code · Python

Plan exam time. Write time_plan(total_minutes, tasks, reserve=20) where tasks is a list of (name, weight) pairs. Keep reserve minutes for the final reboot and checks, and share the rest between tasks in proportion to their weight, rounding each share DOWN to whole minutes. Return a dict of name to minutes. If total_minutes <= reserve, every task gets 0.

Task 3 · Practice

Write your own one-page "verify" cheat sheet: for each kind of task you practised (users, storage, network, firewall, SELinux, services, cron, containers, boot), the one or two commands that prove it is done and persistent. Use it in your next timed practice.
