RHCSA (EX200): what it is and how to prepare

Explanation

RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) is earned by passing the EX200 exam. It is performance-based: you do real tasks on live RHEL systems, with no multiple-choice questions and no internet. It covers what modules 1 to 8 of this course teach. Always check the current exam page for the RHEL version, duration and objectives.

Why RHCSA is respected

Many certifications are multiple-choice tests that reward memorising. RHCSA is different: you get virtual machines and a list of tasks, such as "create a logical volume of 400 MiB mounted at /data at boot" or "configure this server to get time from classroom.example.com". A script checks the final state of the machines, often after rebooting them. You pass only if things actually work. That is why employers in India and elsewhere treat RHCSA as proof that someone can do the job, not just talk about it.

What the exam covers

Red Hat publishes the objectives on the exam page. They change from time to time, and they are tied to a specific RHEL version (RHEL 9 for many years; newer versions appear as Red Hat updates the exam). Broadly, they map to this course like this:

Objective area (broadly)Where in this course
Essential tools: shell, files, redirection, grep, archives, permissions, man pagesModules 1, 2, 7
Shell scripts: conditions, loops, argumentsModule 7
Operate running systems: boot, targets, root password reset, processes, logs, tunedModules 3, 8
Local storage: partitions, LVM, swapModule 5
File systems: create, mount, fstab, extendModule 5
Deploy, configure and maintain systems: scheduling, services, software, time, boot targetsModules 3, 4, 7
Networking: addresses, hostname, name resolution, firewallModule 4
Users and groups, password ageing, sudoModule 2
Security: firewalld, SELinux, SSH keys, file contexts, ports, booleansModules 4, 6
Containers with Podman, persistent storage, systemd servicesModule 8
Careful: This table is a study guide, not the official list. Before you book, read the current objectives on Red Hat's RHCSA page line by line and tick off each one in your lab. If the exam has moved to a newer RHEL version, practise on that version.

How the exam works

  • Hands-on, on live virtual machines. No internet; man pages, --help and /usr/share/doc are available.
  • Tasks are graded by checking the final state, usually after a reboot. Something that works only until reboot counts as not done.
  • Taken at a test centre or as a remote exam, depending on what Red Hat offers in your region. Duration, price, passing score and rules are on the official page; they change, so check there rather than relying on blogs.
  • You get a score report by email afterwards. If you fail, you can retake (for a new fee, or a free retake if your package includes one).

Ways to prepare

  1. This course plus your own lab: RHEL with the free developer subscription, or Rocky/Alma, in VMs with extra disks.
  2. Red Hat's official courses (for example RH124 and RH134, or the faster RH199 for people with experience) if your employer pays or you want structured training. They are paid.
  3. Practice exams that YOU write: list 20 tasks from the objectives, reset your VMs, set a timer, do them, reboot, and check everything yourself.

A realistic timeline at one hour a day: 8 to 12 weeks from zero, or 4 to 6 weeks if you already use Linux at work. Book the exam when you can finish a full practice run in time without notes, twice in a row.

Common mistakes

  • Studying from old notes made for RHEL 7 or 8 (for example network-scripts files, ntpd, or old container commands). Use material for the current version.
  • Only reading and watching videos. The exam rewards typing speed and muscle memory; spend most of your time in the lab.
  • Forgetting persistence: fstab, enable, --permanent, -P, set-default. Reboot your practice VMs every time.

In real life: From BSc graduate to Linux admin in Pune

Priya finished a BSc in Pune and joined a support desk at ₹2.6 LPA. She studied an hour every evening for ten weeks on a laptop with three VMs, wrote her own practice tasks, and passed RHCSA on her second attempt after failing a storage task the first time. Three months later she moved to a Linux administrator role at a managed service provider. The certificate got her interviews; her lab stories got her the job.

Task 2 · Question

Where should you get the exam duration and objectives?

Task 3 · Practice

Write a 20-task RHCSA practice exam for yourself from the current official objectives, covering every objective group at least once. Reset your VMs, do it in one sitting with a timer, reboot, and grade yourself.

Answer: No; only local documentation

Learn to use man and --help.

A task works until reboot but not after. How is it graded?

Answer: As not done

Persistence is part of every task.

What is the best preparation method?

Answer: Hands-on lab practice with timed self-made exams

The exam tests doing, not recall. Using leaked "dumps" also breaks Red Hat's rules and can get a certification revoked.
