Simple past: talking about yesterday

Explanation

Use the simple past for finished actions: "I watched a film yesterday." Most verbs add -ed (walk → walked), but many common verbs are irregular (go → went, eat → ate). For "be", use was and were. बीती हुई बातों के लिए simple past।

The simple past (सामान्य भूतकाल) is for actions that started and finished in the past: yesterday, last week, in 2020, two days ago. The good news: the verb is the same for every person. I went, she went, they went.

Was and were

QuestionDid + person + base verb?Did you go? Did she eat?
Wh- questionWh- + did + person + base verb?Where did you go?

I didn't see him yesterday.

Say it: ai DID-unt SEE him YES-ter-day

मैंने उसे कल नहीं देखा।

After did/didn't, use the base verb: "didn't see", not "didn't saw".

What did you eat for lunch?

Say it: wot did yoo EET for LUNCH?

तुमने दोपहर में क्या खाया?

Think of it like this: Did is like a time machine. When "did" is in the sentence, it carries the past, so the main verb can stay in its normal form: "Did you go?" Only one word needs to travel to the past.
Careful: Common mistakes: "I didn't went" (say "I didn't go"), "Did you saw?" (say "Did you see?"), "Yesterday I go to market" (say "Yesterday I went to the market").
Tip: Every night, say five sentences about your day in the past tense before you sleep.
