Talking about the future: will and going to

Explanation

Use "will" for quick decisions, promises and predictions: "I will call you." Use "going to" for plans you already made: "I am going to visit my aunt on Sunday." Both are common in speech.

English has a few ways to talk about the future (भविष्य). The two most useful are "will" and "be going to". Learn the difference in feeling, but do not worry too much: in many sentences both are fine.

FormUseExample
will + verba decision made nowIt's cold. I'll close the window.
will + verba promise or offerI'll help you. I won't tell anyone.
will + verba guess about the futureIndia will win the match.
am/is/are going to + verba plan made beforeI'm going to buy a scooter next month.
am/is/are going to + verbsomething we can see comingLook at those clouds. It's going to rain.

I'll call you tonight.

Say it: ail KAWL yoo to-NYT

"I'll" is the short form of "I will". In speech, use the short form.

Don't worry, I'll help you.

Say it: DOHNT WUR-ee, ail HELP yoo

I won't be late.

Say it: ai WOHNT bee LAYT

"Won't" = will not. Say it "wohnt", different from "want".

I'm going to start a tuition class.

Say it: aim GOH-ing to START a tyoo-ISH-un KLAAS

Are you going to attend the wedding?

Say it: aar yoo GOH-ing to a-TEND the WED-ing?

It's going to rain.

Say it: its GOH-ing to RAYN

Bonus: present continuous for fixed plans

We're leaving for Goa on Friday.

Say it: weer LEEV-ing for GOH-a on FRY-day

For plans with a fixed time and place (tickets booked), "We are leaving..." is very natural.

Think of it like this: "Going to" is like a train ticket already in your pocket: the plan is booked. "Will" is like deciding at the station to buy a samosa: you decide right now.
Careful: Common mistakes: "I will going" (say "I will go" or "I am going to go"), "Tomorrow I go to Delhi" for a single plan (say "Tomorrow I am going to Delhi"), "I will be call you" (say "I will call you").
Tip: Every morning, say three things you are going to do today and one promise with "I will".
