Shadowing and thinking in English

Explanation

Shadowing means speaking along with a recording, just a moment behind it, copying its sounds and rhythm. Thinking in English means talking to yourself in English instead of translating from Hindi. Together they make your speech faster and more natural. रोज़ 10 मिनट काफ़ी हैं।

Many learners know grammar but speak slowly, because they first think in Hindi and then translate (अनुवाद). Translation takes time and gives Hindi word order. Two habits fix this: shadowing trains your mouth and ear; thinking in English trains your brain.

Shadowing, step by step

  1. Pick a short audio of one to two minutes: a news clip, a podcast, or any lesson on this site that is read aloud.
  2. Listen once without speaking. Get the main idea.
  3. Listen again while reading the words (use subtitles or the text).
  4. Now speak with the recording, about half a second behind it, like an echo. Copy the stress, the pauses and the tone, not only the words.
  5. Record yourself shadowing, then compare with the original. Repeat the same clip for three to five days.

I'm going to listen first, then speak along with it.

Say it: aim GOH-ing to LIS-en FURST, then SPEEK a-LONG with it

मैं पहले सुनूँगा, फिर साथ-साथ बोलूँगा।

Let me play that part again.

Say it: let mee PLAY that PAART a-GEN

मुझे वह हिस्सा फिर से चलाने दो।

Thinking in English

Start small. Describe what you are doing and seeing, silently or in a low voice. This is called self-talk (ख़ुद से बात करना). It feels strange for a week; after that, it becomes natural.

Okay, I'm making tea. The milk is boiling. I need more sugar.

Say it: oh-KAY, aim MAY-king TEE. the MILK iz BOY-ling. ai need MOR SHUG-er

ठीक है, मैं चाय बना रहा हूँ। दूध उबल रहा है। मुझे और चीनी चाहिए।

The bus is late again. I think I'll take an auto.

Say it: the BUS iz LAYT a-GEN. ai THINK ail TAYK an AW-toh

बस फिर से लेट है। मुझे लगता है मैं ऑटो ले लूँगा।

What's the English word for this? I'll check it later.

Say it: wots the ING-glish WURD for THIS? ail CHEK it LAY-ter

इसका अंग्रेज़ी शब्द क्या है? मैं बाद में देखूँगा।

Keep a small list of words you did not know during self-talk, and look them up in the evening.

Word order and chunks

Hindi order (SOV)Word-by-word (wrong)English order (SVO)
मैं चाय पीता हूँ।I tea drink.I drink tea.
वह कल दिल्ली गया।He yesterday Delhi went.He went to Delhi yesterday.
मुझे यह काम पसंद है।To me this work is liked.I like this work.

Learn chunks (पूरे वाक्यांश), not single words. "Would you mind if I...", "It depends on...", "I'm not sure, but I think..." come out in one breath, so you do not build every sentence from zero.

Think of it like this: Shadowing is like learning a film song. You do not study grammar to sing it; you play it again and again and sing along until the words and tune become yours. Do the same with English speech.
Careful: Mistakes to avoid: choosing audio that is too hard or too long, shadowing without first understanding the meaning, reading silently instead of speaking aloud, and giving up after two days because it feels odd. Ten minutes daily beats one hour on Sunday.
Tip: Tonight, describe your evening in English for three minutes as you do it: cooking, cleaning, walking. No pressure, no audience. Write down two words you were missing.

In real life: Two friends at a library talk about practice

Nikhil: Your English sounds so smooth now. What changed? Pooja: I started shadowing. Every morning I take a two-minute news clip and speak along with it. Nikhil: Along with it? At the same time? Pooja: Just a little behind, like an echo. I copy the pauses and the stress, not only the words. Nikhil: And how do you stop translating from Hindi? Pooja: I talk to myself in English. On the bus I describe what I see: the traffic is terrible, that shop has a sale. Nikhil: Doesn't it feel strange? Pooja: For the first week, yes. Now my brain just switches to English.
