Your daily speaking routine

Explanation

Fluency comes from speaking a little every day, not a lot once a week. A 20 to 30 minute routine is enough: warm up, shadow, speak on a topic and record it, learn a few chunks, and have one real conversation.

Your mouth has muscles, and muscles learn by daily practice, like a gym. A fixed routine (रोज़ का नियम) also removes the daily question "What should I practise today?". Here is a plan you can do in 20 to 30 minutes, even on a phone.

TimeActivityHow
5 minWarm-upRead a paragraph aloud slowly; say two tongue twisters three times.
5 minShadowingShadow the same short clip all week.
5 minSpeak and recordTalk for one to two minutes on a topic; listen back once.
5 minFive new chunksLearn five useful phrases and use each in your own sentence.
5 to 10 minReal conversationA call, a chat with a colleague, or a voice note to a friend in English.
SundayWeekly reviewListen to this week's recordings and note one thing to fix.

She sells sea shells by the sea shore.

Say it: shee SELZ SEE shelz by the SEE SHOR

A tongue twister for s and sh. Start slowly, then speed up.

Today I want to talk about my favourite festival.

Say it: to-DAY ai WONT to TAWK a-BOWT my FAY-vrit FES-ti-vul

"Favourite" is the UK and Indian spelling; American English writes "favorite".

Can we talk in English for ten minutes? I'm practising.

Say it: kan wee TAWK in ING-glish for TEN MIN-its? aim PRAK-ti-sing

Let me record this and listen to it later.

Say it: let mee ri-KORD this and LIS-en to it LAY-ter

Topics for one-minute talks

  • My hometown and what I miss about it
  • A person who changed my life
  • The best and worst thing about mobile phones
  • How I would spend one lakh rupees
  • My plan for the next five years

Check yourself with technology

Turn on voice typing (dictation) on your phone keyboard and speak a few sentences. If the phone types what you meant, your pronunciation is clear. If it types something else, repeat that word slowly. The speak tasks on this site work the same way.

Basically, actually, I am, you know, very interested.

Say it: BAY-sik-lee, AK-choo-a-lee, ai am, yoo NOH, VE-ree IN-tres-tid

Too many fillers! Better: "I am... very interested." A short silent pause sounds more confident than "basically" or "actually".

Think of it like this: A speaking routine is like brushing your teeth. Two minutes every day keeps your teeth healthy; brushing for two hours once a month does not work. Small, daily, boring practice wins.
Careful: Common traps: waiting to "feel ready" before speaking, practising only by reading and writing, changing the plan every day, and comparing yourself with others. Compare yourself only with your own day 1 recording.
Tip: Record a one-minute talk today on "my hometown" and save it as "Day 1". Record the same topic on day 30. You will hear the difference, and that proof is the best motivation.

In real life: A bank clerk plans her practice with a friend

Shalini: I want to speak better English for my promotion interview, but I have no time. Anita: How much time do you spend on your phone on the metro? Shalini: About forty minutes a day. Anita: Use twenty of them. Five minutes shadowing, five minutes reading aloud quietly, and record a one-minute talk on your way home. Shalini: And who will I talk to? Anita: Me! Let's send each other one English voice note every evening. Shalini: Deal. And on Sunday I'll listen to all my recordings. Anita: Perfect. Keep your day 1 recording. You will be surprised in a month.
