In, on, at, under, near: small words of place and time

Explanation

Prepositions show where something is or when something happens. "The keys are on the table." "The cat is under the bed." "I will meet you at 5 pm on Monday." Hindi puts these words after the noun (मेज़ पर); English puts them before (on the table).

A preposition (संबंधबोधक) is a small word like in, on, at, under or near. In Hindi we say "मेज़ पर" (table on). In English the order flips: "on the table". This is the main thing to remember.

betweenके बीच मेंThe shop is between the school and the park.

Use "at" for a point or place where something happens: at home, at work, at the station, at school.

But: "at night" (not "in the night").

Think of it like this: Think of a cricket ball and a box. The ball can be in the box, on the box, under the box, next to the box, or behind the box. Picture it, and the words become easy.
Careful: Common mistakes: "I am in home" (say "at home"), "on the night" (say "at night"), "in Monday" (say "on Monday"), "discuss about" (just "discuss").
Tip: Hide an object and describe where it is: "The remote is under the cushion, next to my bag."
