Project · Spoken English: Zero to Fluent

Project: six real-life calls and visits

Projectintermediate· about 4 hours· 7 steps

The brief

You prepare and record six situations that every adult in India meets: booking a train ticket at the reservation counter, calling the bank about a blocked ATM card, a clinic visit, a polite complaint about a late food delivery, a point at a society meeting, and passing on what everyone said. You start with a phrase bank and keep a review log.

Why it matters

These calls and visits are where weak English costs real money and time: a wrong ticket, a card left blocked, medicine taken the wrong way, or a refund never asked for. Customer care centres, banks, hospitals and housing societies all work in English, and calm, polite English gets problems solved faster.

Skills you practise

  • polite requests with could, would and may
  • present perfect and past continuous
  • if-sentences and should
  • passive voice
  • reported speech
  • phone-call phrases

You need

  • A phone with a voice recorder app
  • Optional: a friend to play the clerk, agent, doctor and neighbours

What you will have at the end

Your calls.txt scripts, a complete review-log.txt and seven voice recordings (six situations and one improved second take).

Step 1 of 7

Build your phrase bank

calls.txt part 0 has two ready phrases each for opening a call, making a polite request, checking you understood and closing.

Most of a real call is fixed phrases. If you know them by heart, your brain is free for the important part: your problem. Write two phrases for each job in part 0, using the phone phrases and polite requests from the course. Then say all eight aloud three times, until they come out without thinking.

Your notes: calls.txt, review-log.txt

Write down each command you ran. It goes into your project summary.
