Transparent areas become white (or your colour)
JPG cannot be see-through. When a PNG with a transparent background is saved as JPG, the transparent parts have to become some colour, and many converters leave them black. Here they become white unless you pick another colour under "Background for see-through parts": black, or any colour from the picker, for example your brand colour or the colour of the page the picture will sit on.
If the transparency has to stay, for a logo on a coloured website, keep PNG or choose WebP, which keeps it and is still small.
When PNG to JPG is the right move
- A photo that was saved as PNG (by a phone screenshot, an editing app or a website) and is far too large: as JPG it is usually 5 to 10 times smaller.
- An upload form that accepts only JPG or JPEG, as many exam, job and government portals do.
- Sending many pictures by email or WhatsApp, where smaller files go faster.
Keep PNG for screenshots with small text, line drawings and logos: JPG blurs sharp edges slightly and can leave faint speckles around text. If you need the JPG under a size limit such as 50 KB, use Compress Image to Exact Size after converting.
