Project exam: fees at a coaching institute
Project examexpert· about 1.25 hours· 6 steps· 75 min · pass 60%
The brief
A coaching institute in Kota needs its fee records sorted out. In 75 minutes, write six pieces of SQL against its batches, students and payments: a dues list, a batch collection report, top payers, monthly collections, a dues view and a receipt trigger. No hints or answers are shown; every task is checked when you hand in.
Why it matters
This is the kind of take-home or live SQL round that data analyst and backend developer jobs use: a small real database, joins that can double-count, NULLs from missing payments, a window function and a database object or two.
Skills you practise
- LEFT JOIN and COALESCE
- avoiding double counting
- CTEs
- RANK and running totals
- views
- triggers
What you will have at the end
Six SQL files answering the institute's fee questions, with a score out of 100 from the automatic checks.
How it is marked (rubric, 100 points)
| Correct answersThe checks pass: full marks for all six tasks, and at least 60% of the points to pass. | 60 |
|---|---|
| No double countingJoins to payments never inflate counts or totals, and students with no payment are not lost. | 15 |
| Clear SQLNamed CTEs, aliases and one clause per line, so a reviewer can follow each answer quickly. | 15 |
| Database objectsThe view and the trigger work for any future student or payment, not just this data. | 10 |
