Project exam · Kotlin and Android App Development
Project exam: a chai shop, from Kotlin to a signed app
The brief
A timed, hands-on exam over the whole course. In 150 minutes you write three small Kotlin programs for a chai shop (a GST bill, a day report and a coroutine loader), then build its Android app: a Room-backed order screen with a ViewModel, unit tests, a Compose UI test and a signed release bundle. Every task is checked from output you paste; no hints or answers are shown until you hand in.
Why it matters
Android job interviews often include a take-home or live task with a clock running: build a small app, make the tests pass and explain your choices. Practising under the same pressure shows you which parts you can do from memory and which you still look up.
Skills you practise
- null safety and functions
- data classes, enums and collection operations
- coroutines and Flow
- Gradle builds and KSP
- unit tests
- Room and Logcat
- ViewModel and configuration changes
- Compose UI tests
- signing and App Bundles
You need
- The Kotlin Playground (play.kotlinlang.org) or IntelliJ IDEA
- Android Studio (Ladybug or newer) with an emulator on API 33 or newer, and adb
- An upload keystore for task 9 (create one in Android Studio when you get there); never paste its passwords
- Two and a half hours without interruptions
What you will have at the end
Your exam score (pass at 70%), the ChaiShop project, and exam-notes.txt with what you did for each task, to review the tasks you missed.
How it is marked (rubric, 100 points)
| Tasks completedEvery task passes its check: exact program output, passing tests, the right log lines and a signed bundle. | 60 |
|---|---|
| Android fundamentalsRoom through a DAO, a ViewModel from viewModel(), stateless composables for testing, and no work on the main thread. | 20 |
| Time managementYou finished within 150 minutes, skipping and returning to any task that blocked you. | 10 |
| Reviewexam-notes.txt records what you did, and for each missed task what went wrong and how you fixed it afterwards. | 10 |

Rules: a project exam
- Do each task on your own machine, then paste the command output into its box here.
- Work alone, without notes or a search engine, as in the real exam.
- No hints and no answers. You can run your code, but the checks run only when you hand in.
- Every task is checked automatically when you hand in, or when the time is up.
- You see which tasks passed at the end. You can take it again.
