Popular stacks and how to choose
Explanation
What is a stack?
A stack is the group of tools used to build one app: a frontend library, a backend language and framework, and a database. A framework is a ready-made structure that handles common work (like routing requests) so you write only your app's own code.
The popular stacks
| Stack | Frontend | Backend | Database | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MERN | React | Node.js + Express | MongoDB | Startups, freelance projects, bootcamps |
| Next.js | React | Server code inside the same Next.js project | Usually PostgreSQL | Product companies, SEO-heavy sites |
| Django + React | React | Python + Django | Usually PostgreSQL | Data and AI-related products, startups |
| Laravel | Blade templates, or Inertia with Vue or React | PHP + Laravel | Usually MySQL | Agencies, business websites, small firms |
| Spring Boot + React or Angular | React or Angular | Java + Spring Boot | Oracle, MySQL or PostgreSQL | IT service companies, banks, large enterprises |
MERN is named after its four parts: MongoDB, Express, React and Node.js. Its plus point is one language, JavaScript, in every layer. Node.js is the program that runs JavaScript outside the browser, on a server.
Next.js is a framework built on React. One project holds both the pages and the server code, and it can build pages on the server before sending them. That helps search engines read the page and makes the first load faster. It is the all-in-one alternative to a separate React frontend and Express backend.
Django (Python) and Laravel (PHP) come with many parts built in, such as login, an admin panel and database tools. Spring Boot (Java) is very common in large Indian IT service companies and banks, usually with React or Angular on the frontend.
SQL or MongoDB?
This is the biggest database choice. An SQL database (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite) keeps data in tables with fixed columns and links tables with keys. MongoDB is a document database: it keeps each record as a JSON-like document, and documents in the same collection can have different shapes.
| SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite) | MongoDB | |
|---|---|---|
| Data shape | Tables with fixed columns | Flexible JSON-like documents |
| Links between data | Strong: foreign keys and JOINs | Possible, but you design around fewer links |
| Good fit | Users, orders, payments, most business apps | Data whose shape changes often, or nested data read as one piece |
| In job posts | Very common, in almost every stack | Common in MERN jobs |
Our Notes app has users, notes and links between them, with rules like "each note belongs to one user". That is a natural fit for SQL. Modern SQL databases such as PostgreSQL can also store JSON in a column when you need some flexibility.
How to choose
- Jobs near you: search job portals for your city and for remote roles. Count which stacks appear most for freshers.
- Your team: if you join a team, use what they use. A shared stack beats a "better" one nobody knows.
- The project: SEO-heavy public pages suit Next.js; a data-heavy admin tool suits Django or Laravel; a client may already have a PHP or Java system.
- Learning time: one language everywhere (JavaScript) means fewer new things to learn at the start.
Why this course uses React + Express + SQL
React is the most widely used frontend library, so it helps in the most job posts. Express is small, so you see and write every piece of the backend yourself instead of trusting hidden magic. SQL is a skill asked for in almost every backend job and teaches you to design data well. After this course, moving to Next.js, MERN or Django is mostly learning new names for things you already understand.

In real life: Three developers, three stacks, one city
In Pune, Meera joins an IT service company and works on a bank project in Spring Boot and Angular. Her college friend Arjun joins a startup that builds a learning app with Next.js and PostgreSQL. Their friend Sana freelances for local shops and clinics using Laravel. A year later, Arjun's startup needs an admin tool and Meera helps on a weekend. She picks up Next.js quickly because she already understands routes, SQL, login and components. The stack was different; the ideas were the same.
Practice (0/3 done)
Each stack is { name, backend } where backend is the language of its backend. Write groupByLanguage(stacks) that returns an object whose keys are the backend languages (in the order they first appear) and whose values are arrays of stack names (in input order).
Write pickStack(needs) for a tiny advice tool. needs is { language, seo, flexibleData }. Apply these rules in order (compare language ignoring case): "python" gives "Django + React"; "php" gives "Laravel"; "java" gives "Spring Boot + React"; "javascript" gives "Next.js" if seo is true, else "MERN" if flexibleData is true, else "React + Express + SQL". Any other language also gives "React + Express + SQL".
Make a comparison table of three stacks you might learn (for example MERN, Next.js and Spring Boot + React). Search a job portal for fresher or junior roles in your city (and remote) for each one, and write down what you find. End with your choice and two reasons.
