KB to MB Converter (1000 and 1024)

Convert KB to MB: 500 KB = 0.5 MB in decimal units or 0.488 MB in the binary units Windows uses. Both conventions shown.

Quick answer

MB = KB ÷ 1,000 in decimal units and MiB = KiB ÷ 1,024 in binary units. 500 KB = 0.5 MB decimal or 0.488 MiB binary; 200 KB = 0.2 MB or 0.195 MiB.

Result
0.5 MB
Conversion
500 kB = 0.5 MB

Two conventions share the same names. Storage makers, phone and upload portals mostly use decimal units (1 MB = 1,000 kB = 1,000,000 bytes); Windows and some older software count in binary steps (1 MiB = 1,024 KiB = 1,048,576 bytes) but label them "MB" and "KB". If a portal says "max 200 KB" and rejects a file Windows calls 196 KB, the file is 196 × 1,024 = 200,704 bytes, just over 200,000.

How the conversion works

Exam and job portals often set photo and signature limits in KB (for example 20 to 50 KB for a signature). If the portal counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and your computer counts 1,024, a file shown as 49 KB is 50,176 bytes and may be rejected by a 50 KB limit.

When in doubt, aim a few KB under the limit; the compress image tool can target an exact size.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB is 500 KB?

0.5 MB in decimal units; 0.488 MiB in binary units.

How many KB make 1 MB?

1,000 in decimal units, 1,024 in binary units.

Why does my upload say the file is too big when it looks small enough?

Usually because the portal and your computer use different KB sizes (1,000 against 1,024 bytes), so a file just under the limit on screen can be just over it in bytes.
