Smaller than PNG, still see-through
WebP supports transparency like PNG but compresses far better, so a logo or cut-out photo on a website can be a fraction of the size with its transparent background intact. For a photo that happens to be saved as PNG, the saving is dramatic, often 80 per cent or more.
At Best (95%) the result is very close to the original; at High it is smaller still and looks the same on screen. Fine text in screenshots holds up best at Best.
Where WebP is not accepted
Upload forms, older desktop software and printers often refuse WebP. For those, keep the PNG, or use PNG to JPG for a small, widely accepted file without transparency.
