Exact pixels, transparency kept

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so a GIF’s pixels and see-through parts come across exactly, with no new blur. It is the natural format for old logos, icons, pixel art and clip art saved as GIF. Edges that were jagged in the GIF stay jagged: GIF transparency is all-or-nothing, and converting does not smooth it.

An animated GIF is saved as its first frame, because a PNG holds one picture.

Frequently asked questions

Which frame of an animated GIF do I get?

The first one.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. PNG supports transparency, so see-through parts stay see-through.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The pictures are read and saved again by your own browser, inside this page, and are never sent to a server. You can turn off Wi-Fi once the page has loaded and it still works.

Will the PNG be bigger?

Often slightly, sometimes smaller. For a photo-like GIF, JPG gives a much smaller file.

Is the GIF to PNG free?

Yes. The GIF to PNG on The Daily Toolbox is free to use as often as you like, with no watermark and no file limit beyond what your device can handle.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. It works in your web browser on a phone or computer, with no account and nothing to install. You can add the site to your home screen to open it like an app.
