Where 500 KB limits come up
Job application portals, internship and fellowship forms, and the supporting-document sections of visa and immigration applications often cap each file at a few hundred kilobytes. 500 KB is generous for typed documents and comfortable for short scans, so the aim is to stay readable rather than to squeeze.
Resumes: keep the text real
Many free compressors turn every page into a picture to save space. For a resume that is a disaster: the applicant tracking system then sees no text at all. This tool keeps the text layer and reduces only the images. After compressing, you can check what a recruiter's software will read with the ATS checker.
Bundling supporting documents
For a visa or loan file, combine the statements and slips with Merge PDF, then compress the bundle. If it still does not fit, the 1 MB page or splitting the bundle by month are the next steps.
