Compare Two Word Documents

See what changed between two versions of a Word document: added words in green, removed words struck through, side by side or inline. Works with PDF and text files too. Nothing uploaded.

Private · on device. Runs in your browser: your file is not uploaded. No sign-up.

Before (the older version)

Word .docx, PDF or text

After (the newer version)

Word .docx, PDF or text
Nothing is uploaded. Both files are read in this browser tab. The words are compared, not the look: a change of font, colour or layout alone does not show. Text in pictures and scanned PDFs cannot be compared until it is read with OCR.

How to compare two Word documents

  1. Choose the older version on the left and the newer one on the right.
  2. Read the changes side by side, or inline in one column.
  3. Turn on Only the changes to skip the paragraphs that stayed the same.
  4. Download the report if you want to keep or send it.

To compare text you have copied, use Text compare.

Frequently asked questions

What does it compare?

The words, paragraph by paragraph and then word by word inside the paragraphs that changed. A change of font, colour or layout alone does not count as a change.

Can I compare a Word file with a PDF?

Yes. Each side can be a .docx, a PDF with text in it or a plain text file. A scanned PDF has no text to compare until it is read with OCR PDF.

Can I keep the result?

Download the report as a web page (with the colours) or as a PDF, where added text is shown {+like this+} and removed text [-like this-].

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Both files are read and compared in this browser tab.
