EAN-13 barcode

Encodes 8901234567890

For retail products the number itself must come from GS1 India (or your country's GS1 office): a barcode made here with an invented number will scan, but shops and marketplaces check that the number is registered to you.

Correct numbers, crisp bars

Pick a type, type the number or text, and the barcode appears as you type. For EAN, UPC and ITF-14 the check digit is worked out for you, or checked if you include it, so a mistyped digit is caught before anything is printed.

Ready to print

Download an SVG for labels and packaging, or a PNG at up to four times the screen size. Adjust the bar width and height to fit your label, and choose whether the number shows under the bars. For QR codes, which hold links and much more text, use the QR code generator.

Frequently asked questions

Which barcode type should I use?

EAN-13 for products sold in shops in India and most countries (UPC-A in the US and Canada), EAN-8 for very small packs, ITF-14 for outer cartons, and Code 128 for anything else: stock codes, shipping labels, file numbers, because it holds letters and symbols as well as digits. Code 39 is older and still common on ID cards and in factories.

What is a check digit?

The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF-14 number, calculated from the others, so a scanner can tell when a digit was misread. Type the number without it and it is added; type it with one and the tool checks it, saying what it should be if a digit has been mistyped.

Can I make my own EAN-13 number for a product?

You can make a barcode that scans, but retailers and online marketplaces check that the number is registered to your company with GS1 (GS1 India in India). Use the numbers GS1 assigns you; an invented number may belong to someone else's product.

PNG or SVG?

SVG is drawn from lines, so it stays sharp at any size: best for printing labels and packaging. PNG is a picture: choose 2× or 4× for print so the bars stay crisp.

How big should I print it?

For EAN-13 the standard size is about 37 mm wide, and it can be printed from 80% to 200% of that. Keep the white margins (quiet zones) on both sides, use dark bars on a light background, and test-scan a printout before printing many.
