Spin the Wheel: Random Name Picker

Put names or choices on a wheel and spin it to pick one fairly, for a classroom, a team or a decision. Remove each winner if you like, full screen and sound optional.

Every entry has exactly the same chance: the winner is drawn with your browser's secure random generator before the wheel starts turning, and the wheel then stops on it. For classrooms, teams and everyday decisions; not for betting or prize draws.

Pick fairly, in front of everyone

Who answers the next question, which team presents first, where to eat tonight: type the names or choices, one per line, and spin. The wheel slows to a stop and the pick is announced on screen and to screen readers.

For teachers

  • Paste your class list once; it is remembered on this device.
  • Turn on "Remove each winner" so everyone gets a turn before anyone gets two.
  • Use Full screen on the classroom projector, and Sound for the ticking as it slows.
  • The "Picked so far" list keeps the order, for marking who has answered.

Frequently asked questions

Is the wheel really fair?

Yes. The winner is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random generator, with every entry exactly equally likely, before the wheel starts turning; the animation then stops on that entry. Where the wheel starts and how hard you press make no difference.

How do I stop the same person being picked twice?

Turn on "Remove each winner from the wheel". Each name picked is taken off, so you can go round the whole class or team once.

How many names can I add?

Up to 200, one per line. With more than about 40 the names get small, so for a big group consider spinning for a team or a row first.

Are my names saved?

The list is kept in this browser only, so it is there next time you open the page on this device. It is never sent anywhere.

Can I show it on a projector?

Press Full screen to fill the screen with the wheel and the Spin button. Press Escape to leave full screen. (iPhone Safari does not allow full screen for page elements, so there the wheel stays in the page.)

Can I use it for a lucky draw or betting?

It is meant for classrooms, teams and everyday decisions. Prize draws and anything involving money usually have legal rules about how winners are chosen and witnessed, which a web page cannot meet.
