Why PNG?

PNG keeps the see-through corners around a circle and loses nothing. Every app accepts it.

Which size should I use?

Any of them works: the apps shrink your picture to fit. 640 pixels is plenty for WhatsApp, 320 for Instagram and 400 for LinkedIn; choose 1080 if you want it to stay sharp on big screens.
