Why BMP files are so big

A BMP stores every pixel with no compression at all: a 1920 × 1080 screenshot is about 6 MB. The same picture as a JPG at High quality is usually a few hundred KB and looks the same, and every website, phone and form accepts JPG, while many reject BMP.

For a screenshot with small text or a drawing with flat colour, choose PNG instead: it keeps every pixel exactly and is still far smaller than the BMP.

Frequently asked questions

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The pictures are read and saved again by your own browser, inside this page, and are never sent to a server. You can turn off Wi-Fi once the page has loaded and it still works.

How much smaller will it be?

Usually 90 per cent or more for a photo or screenshot. The exact size is shown next to each result.

Should I choose JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos and scans of photos; PNG for screenshots, diagrams and pictures with text, which JPG can blur slightly at the edges.

Does it open every BMP?

It opens the BMP files browsers can read, which covers those saved by Paint, Windows and nearly all software. A rare compressed or 16-bit variant may be refused with a message.

Is the BMP to JPG free?

Yes. The BMP to JPG on The Daily Toolbox is free to use as often as you like, with no watermark and no file limit beyond what your device can handle.
