What AVIF is

AVIF is a newer picture format that some websites serve and some Android phones and cameras save, because it is even smaller than WebP at the same quality. Many apps, editors, older computers and upload forms cannot open it yet. As a JPG it opens everywhere.

The picture is decoded by your browser: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later read AVIF. An older browser shows a message instead of a broken result. Transparent parts become white or the colour you choose, and an animated AVIF gives one still picture.

Frequently asked questions

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The pictures are read and saved again by your own browser, inside this page, and are never sent to a server. You can turn off Wi-Fi once the page has loaded and it still works.

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses much better than JPG. The same picture needs more bytes as JPG; choose a lower quality for a smaller file.

My browser says it cannot open the file. What now?

Update the browser, or open this page in a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox: they all read AVIF.

Can I keep transparency?

Not in JPG. Use AVIF to PNG to keep see-through parts.

Is the AVIF to JPG free?

Yes. The AVIF to JPG on The Daily Toolbox is free to use as often as you like, with no watermark and no file limit beyond what your device can handle.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. It works in your web browser on a phone or computer, with no account and nothing to install. You can add the site to your home screen to open it like an app.
